The hotel was really nice. beds very comfortable, breakfast very good, a big selection. dinner staff very very friendly, everyone was really nice and welcoming.
facilities excellent. we had a nice weather, so could go out and enjoy it. however, even if it was raining, you have so much to do there. there is a DJ in the evening in the bar area.Music choice was excellent.
i cannot fault this stay at all. only a little thing, the Fish restaurant was closed which i was looking forward to, however that did not ruin my stay.
nice hotel, great facilities, lovely staff.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by CGnNG Not the relaxing time we were expecting!!!!! This is not a 4* hotel.
From the minuet we got there we had problems
1) Was told check-in was 3pm and room was not ready but web site says check in is 2pm, never mind we upgraded this was the start to all our problems.
2) Club lounge not maned people were bringing in lots of friends and taking bottles of wine away to there tables n hiding them. There was less than one canopy per person. Very very poor.
3) We were told catch 22 restraunt was closed and it was highlighted on the web page we still cannot find this.
4) Only time we could get into restaurant was 9pm the quality and choice of food was not as good as earlier after speaking to others who ate around 7pm. We were never asked if we wanted a drink or even a glass of water, our starter, main and pudding plates were all still on our table if felt as if we were invisible.
5) After dinner we went to the bar we asked for 2 Irish coffees one was correct the other looked more like a latte! The person serving us told us her manager said to still serve it ever though it was wrong wen we asked to speak to him he was not very helpfull at all.
6) There was a DJ in the bar lots of hen party's n lots a lads on golf breaks, if we knew there was a DJ on we would not have booked that weekend as it was very busy and lots of noise. I really think they should advertise if they are having a DJ on, as we were looking for a relaxing quite time. We did not get this.
7) So thinking that things could not get any worse we went to bed......how wrong could I be
We left our window open as it was very hot, we closed our window/doors due to the noise got into bed, went to turn on the TV and what do we find sitting on top of it a Pigeon yes a Pigeon lol we opened the windows to try n get it out only to find 2footballs n a tennis ball in the room .... The only thing I can think is kids must have throwing them at the Pigeon to get it into our room. We had to laugh either that or cry.
The next day we wanted to leave but after speaking to 2 of the management team they asked us to stay and they would make it up to us so we stayed (I so wish we had gone home)
8) I have never need to a 4* star hotel where thery is only a 3 slot toaster to serve the breakfast room lol. We asked for 2 poached edges each we only got one each, the other came after we had finished our breakfast.
9) We were given a complaymentry treatment in the spa when I went back to our room it was still not made up 2-45pm so I asked if it could be done next as we wanted a rest, we went back at 4-15pm to give them time BUT it was still not done, when I called I was told sorry it was forgotten and told that it never happend. ( no only to us).
10) Dinner on our 2nd night better but not by much, we were told we would be really looked after but this was not felt at all.
11) Breakfast on day 2 was very very poor there was a que of 10 people waiting for fresh food to come out. This is not 4*.
12) I asked if club lounge had Internet usage and was told no but when checking out there was information saying there was.
13) We were yet again very confused what time to check-out after asking reception we were told 12noon but in our room it informed us 2pm as we are priority club members.
We had a really bad time as this hotel and would not recommend it to anyone.

My daughter and I booked an all-inclusive spa break six months in advance. Just prior to the holiday date (May 28) I read the reviews for the hotel and was rather disappointed to find out how negative they all were. HOWEVER, the experience my daughter and I had in no way mirrored that of any of the complaints I had read.
We arrived early (12.15) and were given a room straight away, despite our check-in time being 3 pm. Later in the afternoon we received a ‘courtesy’ phone call from reception checking if everything was okay in the room. The room was spacious and clean. Bathroom included a separate shower and bath. Heating/air-con was fully functioning. Beautiful view from window. I’m glad we weren’t placed in accommodation in ‘The village’ as I would not have been happy walking outside in a Spa gown and slippers to gain access to the Spa in the main body of the hotel. I am not sure, but perhaps the outside accommodation is for those attending conferences or on simple overnight stays?
We had 5 spa treatments over the two nights/three days that we stayed. All of these were fantastic, the staff were lovely and the relaxation room was superb!
The buffet evening meal was beautifully presented, well cooked and lots of choice. There were approx. eight different main choices including vegetarian. The menu changed on the second night. We were given the option of ‘A la carte’ with a budget of £21.50 to spend. We decided to go with the buffet as it meant that we could try a small portion of everything – absolute delight! We sampled all the desserts by sharing them. They are not too large, which means you can try them all without feeling guilty of overindulgence! If you get the chance, try the lemon cream dessert (in a small glass) - as the young say - 'it was to die for!' There were no restrictions on how many times you could take food from the buffet.
Lunch was in a different area of the hotel. Available to order were a large range of Panini’s, sandwiches, burgers, salads etc, etc, with an additional choice from the ‘help yourself’ salad bar.
Breakfast choice included the usual full English breakfast along with cold buffet, croissants etc. Breakfast choice could not be faulted. If you want an omelette or poached eggs, you only have to ask #which I did#. Staff are observant, a young waiter noticed that I had been waiting rather too long #in his opinion# for my poached eggs, apologised to me and then went and chased up the order.
Gym, swimming pool, sauna and Jacuzzi were all as you would expect – no problems encountered at all.
At all times we found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Every time we passed a member of staff they greeted us with ‘Good morning/afternoon’.
The grounds are beautiful and the hotel is absolutely gorgeous!!
There were a few MINOR irritations. We had to remind staff we were all inclusive at each of the meals as twice they attempted to bill us for a meal. There was thick soap scum around the bottom sill of the outside of the shower door. Both of the TV remote controls we were given were unreliable and caused some frustration when we attempted to change channels etc.
However, we can both unreservedly recommend this hotel.

We booked our stay via groupon which was at a very good price for a cream tea , overnight stay and breakfast. We upgraded to an executive room which overlooked the golf course and was very contemporary and clean and the bed was very big and comfy. We ate in the restaurant and had the Buffett which was a bit overpriced but lots of choice. The breakfast was also very good with a big choice. The swimming pool is very small with not a lot of room to sit round but ok for a quick swim. Would definitely return!

I booked the Crowne Plaza - Five Lakes for mine and my husbands 9th Wedding Anniversary. We stayed for 2 nights. It was a fantastic break away. The Hotel was lovely, very clean and welcoming. The room was clean, comfortable and big enough. The Spa was lovely, very relaxing. The steam room and sauna were perfect. We had a back, shoulder and neck massage which was very relaxing.
The bar had a lovely atmosphere and was very welcoming. We spent hours sitting on the terrace in the sun which was very relaxing. It was also very peaceful.
The meals were also very nice, the buffet style evening meals are a fantastic idea and there is a wide enough selection to suit everyone.
Overall, we had a great time and I can't complain about anything. It was our first break away from the children for over 5 years so I really wanted it to be perfect which it was. I would definitely recommend this spa hotel to everyone.

The staff were unknowledgeable about the hotel. eg. checkout times. It took an hour to check in despite the front desk having only a queue of 3 people. Not all the amenities in the room worked and despite several calls to reception the problem was never resolved.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by alliesair OK, but let down by various avoidable factors
Well, seeing as you asked...
First impressions of the Hotel were great. Lovely Reception Space and a friendly welcome. We were able to check in at half 12, as requested, so I was initially very happy, although as I'd booked this as a 30th birthday present for my best friend, I wasn't particularly pleased when the rate i'd booked was broadcast quite loudly to us both...
We were given our key for a room in 'the village' an area of rooms slightly away from the main hotel, a 3-4 minute walk or so from reception.
When we arrived at our block, our key wouldn't open the main door, so back to reception we went to sort it out. A team member accompanied us back and, with her management key, we were able to gain access. Interestingly our key allowed us to open our bedroom door but not the door to our block. We were heading out for the afternoon and were told the issue would be looked at and fixed before we returned.
On first inspection, the Room was very large, bright and tidy. 2 beds pushed together (we had requested a twin but I wonder if this would be the same if we had a double) and they were very comfortable. Nice fresh white bedding too. As we started to unpack though, we noticed little things that let it down a bit like 1 Bathrobe, 1 loo roll, 1 bottle of water only (there were 2 of us!) and a chipped cup. Simply rectified and avoidable, but clearly missed upon inspection by housekeeping...
Some 6-7 hours later, we returned from our day out to find that our key would not work in the main door again so off to reception we went once more... The young chap there apologised and walked us over, telling us that it would be resolved before we returned from dinner which we were having in the main hotel but when we did come back from dinner, surprise surprise we could not get in again!!! By this stage, I was starting to get a bit miffed and embarrassed in front of my friend who I'd booked this for, as I had to keep dragging her back to reception with me!
The same guy who'd walked us over earlier in the evening, took us back again, saying he'd requested the fix, but maintenance go home at 7pm so it'll be looked at first thing in the morning now. As we were on our way to the room, he asked us the same questions he'd asked us on the journey just a few hours before.
I know he probably felt a bit embarrassed and was trying to fill the silence during the few minutes walk but remember your customers!! When I told him he'd already asked us that, he said he speaks to so many people in a day and forgets who's who ...
Dinner was Ok but nothing to write home about. We were on a dinner bed and breakfast tariff but I would have been disappointed if we'd had to have paid for dinner separately. We had £21 to spend but £15.50 for a chicken breast and a few fries and £5.50 on a bowl of ice cream seemed a bit extortionate to me and this amount didn't cover enough for a starter, main and pudding because of how expensive each course was.
Breakfast on the other hand was lovely, a great selection of full English, fruit, pastries, rolls, toast etc. And you had marmite too, so I was happy!!
Sadly, it was slightly ruined by yet another visit to reception upon returning to our room as we STILL couldn't gain access... Thankfully we were checking out that morning ... but it meant one of us had up stay in the room whilst the other made various trips to the car with the luggage!
So, good points and bad points really, the bad ones of which would have been overlooked and forgiven if it hadn't been for the constant trips to and from reception to be granted permission and access to a room I'd paid good money for!

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by MarkEssex1984 Many Things Wrong
Firstly, the venue is lovely and we were very impressed.
The staff on the whole were polite and helpful.
They were let down by several annoyances which means I would not pay to stay there again.
The main complaints are below:
- The time taken to check in was unacceptable for a hotel, at least 30 minutes. When we did check in, we were unable to be given our key so were asked to come back later for the key. At this point the queue was at least twice as long. Fortunately, a member of staff who looked like management sorted our key for us so we didnt have to wait.
- My debit card was not able to be authorised for extras because it expired in 2016? I'm still totally confused by this. We set it up with my girlfriends instead (hers expires 2017)
- We had afternoon tea. The scones and tea cakes came out but we had no plates. We then finished them by the time the pot of tea finally come out. This took 25 mins.
- When we ordered drinks, we couldnt charge them to the room as we didnt have a tab. Clearly we did as we had just gone through the pain of my card being refused and my girlfriend using hers. We fortunately had some cash on us.
- Went to the pool and the jacuzzi wasnt working properly.
- In the room, the radiator was making a hissing sound all night which kept us awake.
- At 8.30am, the TV switched itself on full blast to display the offers etc from Crowne Plaza waking us up.
- At breakfast the food was warm rather than hot. All the plates were cold.
- Walking back to the room, my girlfriend was very aggressively asked what she wanted by a member of staff near the Golf area as we were about to walk outside to our room. He asked us to walk through the hotel rather than through the gardens. He then proceeded to tell us our room was down a corridor, up some stairs and on the second floor. Firstly, it was 10.30am so we had clearly stayed the night so knew where our room was, secondly he was completely wrong. We were staying in the executive rooms by the golf course so nowhere near where he said.
To save you some time, I have complied the response which I’m 99% certain you will give, please feel free to copy and paste.
Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review about your recent stay with us. We are pleased that you liked the venue and found our staff polite and helpful. Please accept our sincere apology though for the shortcomings you experienced during your stay. We constantly strive to provide an environment of comfort and value to our guests, therefore, we are sincerely concerned when we fall short of your expectations. We have taken note of your valuable comments and will use these to monitor and improve the quality of services we offer to our guests.
We hope you give us a chance in the future to show you how great our hotel is

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Robert811 New Restaurant set-up is dreadful
Changes made recently appear more centered to savign money than guest experience. The new set menu which is the SAME all week often has soup of the day - ALL WEEK. Also as a platinum member and often away from home on business I prefer not to sit in a restaurant which is either full of couples or sometimes 20 tables for one, but eat in the club lounge in a more homely surrounding. Yet I was told this time the restaurant manager had decided on his own I wasn't allowed.
restaurant is going down hill fast.
Also my bed was not changed three days into the stay and rubbish from the previous guest was left in my room.
As trhis was a club room I was not impressed.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Weekendguest1 Great weekend away
We really enjoyed our weekend at five lakes. The only negative thing was the sauna, swimming pool and where to get the towels was not very well sign posted. So we ended up having to ask a few members of staff where to go. Some staff were more helpful than others, the swimming pool attendant was very helpful however the spa bar staff and some of the restaurant staff didnt seem to know what they were doing. The only other thing was when I booked the offer of bed, breakfast and dinner they didnt inform me that there was a limit on the a la carte menu and it was only actually the buffet we could have within the offer. I was only informed of this when I checked in. The DJ playing in the evening was brilliant, it made our evening even more enjoyable. Overall most staff were very friendly and helpful (especially the reception staff), room was lovely, we had a really good night away.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by stillsotired The worst hotel stay ever!
We stayed on a Saturday night at the Crowne Plaza Colchester (Five Lakes) in April 2013.
When we got back to our room around midnight, we had a lovely large comfortable room in the 'village' (not in the main hotel building'). We were awoken at 3am by screaming, shouting and swearing, drunken people in the stairwell, and outside, and in the room next door. The walls must be so thin, it was so loud it sounded as if they were standing on our bed arguing! This was alarming and very disturbing. When we complained to reception, they came half an hour later and knocked on the door of the shouting couple and got them to quiet down.
In the morning, there was about 1 minute of hot water in the shower until it went ice cold.
The duty manager was apologetic the next morning when we complained and did give us a small discount on our bill, about 25%. Additionally, the hotel wrote to us apologizing for a completely unrelated issue (the swimming pool being closed) which we had not complained about, just confirming that they do not listen to their 'valued' customers.
Overall, it was THE WORST hotel stay we have ever had and we were extremely disappointed. We would have been better off in all ways at a cheaper hotel!

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by 06Boof70 Family wedding & reception, approx 100 guests
This venue were unable to give us access to our room until 20 minutes before the time we needed to be at the wedding service (in the venue). This started, what should have been a relaxed a pleasant stay, into stressful & rushed preparations. This in spite of a specific request the previous day. Guests arriving after us were give rooms immediately. No explanation was offered.
The wedding breakfast (approx 100 people) included coffee. A simple request for one Espresso coffee could not be accommodated without a surcharge - why?
This is NOT customer service at its best.

A good value and comfortable room, albeit far too warm, with good facilities, particularly for keeping the children entertained. Breakfast was good but don't fall for the Brasserie. The menu was mouthwatering but the food itself fell way short of the promise and wholly failed to justify the prices charged.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by CambsIanP Poor experience
Unfortunately I found that we had a very poor experience staying at the Five Lakes hotel. The problems we had with our room included:
TV remote not working
Room safe not working
Booked a King Size bed, but instead receive two large singles poorly joined together (one was higher up than the other making it very uncomfortable)
Nice looking bathroom but very poor shower pressure
Stupidly expensive breakfast (£17 Full English)
The main problem though was we went out during the day and returned to our room early evening, our room in the Village appartments had been cleaned but the double balcony doors left wide open. Being mid-march (and British weather as it is) it was snowing & freezing outside so wasn't happy to return to a freezing cold hotel room, never mind the lack of security for our belongings!
I complained to the duty manager upon leaving, but were just given a list of excuses and didn't feel any apologies were sincere, he even asked if we would be coming back! No we are not!!

Had an overnight stay with Five Lakes for a break with my partner, so pleased we picked this hotel. We had the kingsize suite which was falbulous and excelled our expectations, amazing decor, very clean and very comfortable room. Dinner was in the Basserie restaurant and the food was amazing!! The only down side was we didn't feel the staff was very attentitive although they were polite and courteous, we didn't feel we was given much attention. On paying for the bill we also noticed three charges to our meal receipt which totalled to around £17 but once I queried this they were taken off straight away. Like I said very helpful but could have been a little more attentitive as we spent over £150 on that one meal. Overall our impressions of this hotel were fabulous and we will be visiting again.

Stayed here over 100 times in last 9 years and been here longer than most of the staff. Hotel is a fantastic location with great rooms overlooking the countryside. Seen a lot of staff come and go and always found the service to be exceptional. The only downside is the excessive wifi cost, since the takeover, it used to be free. The IHG scheme makes up for this . Miss the old buffet and the football shirts that used to adjourn the walls, still a tranquil release in a beautiful location.

The wifi costs at this hotel are totally over the top! For a hotel out in the middle of countryside with poor mobile phone reception it should be free WIFI instead its very expensive.
Bathrooms are really old compared to the rooms stained roof, plaster peeling off the walls and sealant stained or missing not close to the standard of the rooms.
I am a platinum member and got no free drink no newspaper not welcomed as a platinum guest really poor.

We stayed with a groupon offer and stayed from Saturday to Sunday. Our room was a Queen sized room which was nice and big with an amazing bed. The bathroom was clean and the room was contemporary yet cosy. We had all we needed in the room, water, tea kettle etc. We ate in the Brasserie restaurant from the A La Carte menu which didnt have a large selection to chose from but It didnt matter. You could chose from the buffet which was about £21 but we decided to eat A La Carte and pay that bit extra. The food in the bar area was very expensive, £6.50 for a cheese and pickle sandwich. Overall the hotel was lovely with a welcoming staff and lovely food but be prepared to pay alot of for the food and drink

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Moo26 Lovely hotel BUT felt let down...
Overall I felt this is a lovely hotel with good facilities and a nice countryside location, perfect for a little Valentine's break or so I thought! After returning home I suddenly realised I had left a virtually brand new blouse (so not to crease) hanging in their wardrobe in our room. Brought it as had originally planned to dine in the hotel restaurant on Valentines night but decided against it as felt the hotel menu seemed rather overpriced (maybe a good choice after reading previous reviews of the hotel restaurant/service). However this was not a problem as we found a lovely pub nearby and had a superb meal. Anyway so after learning I was without my blouse I immediately called the hotel to be told no one was available from housekeeping and they would call me back, which they eventually did to be told nothing was found/handed in from that room, strange! Sent an email enquiring about the hotel's policy regarding lost property yet received no reply! Shame this was my second visit to the hotel/spa but after this experience it will definitely make me think twice.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by mrangry17 Poor staff service and attention
When we checked in at 5 Lakes on 1st March, we had to wait, not enough staff. Mostly in the back room chatting.
We went for afternoon tea in the bar area and sat for 20 minutes with no one approaching us or offering a menu. We had to go to the bar to get attention, and even after ordering we had to wait another 20 mins for our scones and tea cakes to arrive as they were apparently being " freshly baked" , When the scones arrived, we were not given plates or cutlery and had to ask again. The scones were rock hard and inedible. No one came and asked if everything was ok, staff just disappeared . No fresh tea or top ups were offered.
The main restaurant prices for dinner were way too high, £25 for a steak is ridiculous for a country hotel. We ate locally in nearby village.
The wi fi internet did not attach to our i phones after we had paid and we had to call the hotel helpline. as reception staff had little knowledge of the system

the rooms and the staff were very good
i picked this hotel because they had a fish restuarant, however this was not available
the main restuarant was a disaster on the first night ,waited 90 minutes for main course, this was blamed on computer error, when the food did arrive it looked and felt like it had been waiting on the side for an hour.
Second evening was a buffet of cold meats and salad and what appeared to be left over from the night before.
if you stay here i suggest you take a packed lunch

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Tom31745 Nice room but appalling service
Reading a lot of reviews I often find some people to seem overly critical however having 'endured' a stay at this hotel I now appreciate the comments and experiences behind them.
The service at reception upon entry was one of complete disinterest, no effort to show us what facilities were available or where anything was. The lunchtime meal was both expensive for what it was and cold. There were no towels or robes in our room which meant waiting for 45 minutes before we could use the swimming pool/spa. There was only one restaurant open whereas the website led us to believe there would be a choice. No atmosphere anywhere in the hotel. There seemed to be a lot of staff who appeared to do absolutely nothing. Slow checkout times. Was also charged an etra £50 quid for 'incidentals' none of which I purchased and am yet to receive a refund for this...... Overall a very very dissapointing weekend and one that would put me off using this chain again.
