The room was as expected, comfortable and peaceful. Although we think it had not been vacuumed before our stay, we found a menu from another restaurant under the bed and crumbs on the carpet which were not ours.
The evening meal was very nice and also breakfast.
Staff were courteous and attentive.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by IainMcc Steaks were awful
We ate in the hotel restaurant our first night as we had booked dinner, bed and breakfast for one night and just bed and breakfast for the second. We both ordered steaks, one medium rare and one medium/well done, The latter steak wasn't fit to feed to a dog (even a dog couldn't cope with that much gristle# and was duly sent back to the kitchen and replaced with a chicken dish and the rarer steak should probably have been sent back as well.
On the positive side the waiting staff were extremely apologetic and compensated us with a bottle of wine #after all it wasn't their fault but the fault of the meat supplier and buyer). One of the waiting staff recommended the Chocolate Nemesis for my dessert which was truly excellent.
Fortunately the breakfasts were considerably better.

At reception we asked for and where allocated a room with a view of the harbour. The room was clean, tidy and well stocked with tea coffee etc. We were able to relax and enjoy watching the traffic on the water. Downstairs the bar area lacked atmoshere and I wouldn't recommend it for a social get together. Breakfast time was very busy but the staff were very quick to turn around tables and allocate seating. The food was wel cooked and tasty. The toast machine was the best ever. One pass to make toast is a first at any hotel I have ever stayed in.
Maybe not within control of the hotel but a bit of a negative is that to access the town from the hotel as a pedestrian requires a dash acroos a busy dual carriage way

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Southampton20 Very Enjoyable Stay
I stayed at the Southampton Holiday Inn during June 2013 and I must admit that I was initially dubious about staying near a dock as I though that there would be constant noise & general disruption. The staff member on reception was very polite and could not do enough for me on arrival, even searched the database for my membership number as I did not bring my card, so my membership points were not lost, very helpful. When entering the room on the 7th floor, there were ceiling to floor windows with privacy blinds that made the room seem very spacious and light. There were no noise concerns as the windows were good enough to block these out. The bathroom facilities were clean and adequate for my stay and the checkout was quick and east with no fuss. Overall a very highly recommended stay.

As a priority memeber I feel this hotel lacks the personal touch in making sure priority members are satisfied and welcome. They have a lot to learn from other IHG hotels.
The hotel is need of updating.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by G3ERD Good hotel but staffing Probs.
Ahead of our annual ferry trip to France we stayed at the Hotel in Southampton, which we found to be excellent in most respects. A little tired in decor and in need of some referbishment.. But the staff and facilities were very good. I am disabled and found that were seven or so parking spaces for "Blue Badge" holders, although there were 2 occupied by non-badge holders. access to the hotel was very good, the only problem which needs urgently sorting out. We arrived at reception around 3.10 and left at about 3.25. Not because of a number of people in front of us, no, only one client was in front, the receptionist was so slow. The client in front of us took around 12 mins. to be looked after, whilst we were there, the receptionist, the only one on duty, was so slow explaining everything in such detail, the clients and the seven people waiting behind us were very frustrated, I found the standing around most painful to my damaged back , I searched for a chair around, none! The management wants to sort out the very poor receptionist, I just cut her short on every thing as my booking in should have been completed before I arrived, Platinum card holder.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Northantsgirl Perfect location for ferry to IOW
Helpful staff, comfortable bed, easily controlled temperature and liked the choice of hard/ soft pillows. We were going to the Isle of Wight for the day and we were just around the corner from the ferry terminal which was ideal. Good choice at breakfast buffet.

We stayed for one night prior to our tour of the Royal Princess.
On arrival we were upgraded to a suite - what a real surprise.
The suite was on the 9th floor with views over the water - we even saw the Royal Princess arrive.
The suite, as one would expect, was larger than the average room, with one room containing a dining table and sofa and chairs. A door then led through to the bedroom and bathroom.
Everything was spotless and very comfortable. We ate lunch in the bar area - good food at a good price. Dinner came as part of our package and the choice available was extensive and cooked well - as we have found on all of our previous stays here.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by sang9 A nice Hotel close to cruise terminals and city centre
Neat and tidy hotel with comprehensive facilities. I stayed in this hotel a day before my cruise to British Isles with Princess. Breakfast is excellent with sufficient choice of cold and hot food and drinks. From the hotel, I could reach the Ocean Terminal on foot within 20 min or 10 min to the Town Centre. I certainly will recommend this Holiday Inn to my friends but warn them wifi will be on extra charge.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by BeckyL Exceptional Staff and great pool
The exceptional staff really made our stay a great one, especially after having arrived after a 10 hour flight from Mexico! With a 2 year old and rain we enjoyed the pool and then a simple suggestion from the receptionists, Amanda, Julie and Andy, changed our day from being a wet and potentially miserable one, to an incredible one. Their local knowledge was invaluable to us and we are very grateful to them.
The cleaning staff and restaurant staff were all very friendly and kind. Clean, comfortable and big smiles all around made our stay a very enjoyable one. Thanks!

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Shingo15 Could be better
Our stay was covered by points earned at previous stays and therefore the room was free. There were two complaints:
Our dinner was only basic in terms of quality and value for money. The broccoli was cold, hard and I reported it to the waitress who informed us she had told the chef and duty manager but no one came to apologise. The breakfast was acceptable and only warm like all of the holiday inns I have stayed in.
The extractor in the bathroom was excessively noisy and was incessant throughout the time we were there. It only went off late at night.
I feel sure both of these points could be improved very quickly and would certainly help make a stay there more enjoyable.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by PonyM Disappointed
The rooms are ideal and I found them comfortable and it was lovely to have tea making facilities in the room.
My only disappointment was the cost of Wifi, when I asked I was given some outlandish price, so I declined. I stay at a hotel in Holland and the Wifi is free for a 24 period to guests. Something that should be considered here bearing in mind the cost of the room for an overnight stay.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Jack1654 Why charge for parking
Nice hotel good location and a very pleasant stay but can never understand why the need to charge for parking. Having spent over £100 for 1 night B&B and another £50+ in the restaurant I was a bit surprised to be charged £7 to park my car overnight.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by dav21 bad experience
We paid extra for an executive room, and were really disappointed in what we got in fact I think we were given a basic room instead of the room we had paid for.
The room was not very clean, and bath room was even worse, and the general decor was just as bad.
We did not get a good night sleep the bed was hard as the floor, and pillows where just the same no softness them at all.
When we looked at it on line everything looked ok, and we thought it was a lot newer than it was when we got there.
As we had not stayed in a Holiday Inn before so we thought we would give it a go to see what they were like we soon found out when we got there!!
Don't think we will be staying here again!!!!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Sue53 Great start to Cruise
We had a great stay at this hotel. I booked in advance and got a great price, which was even better as we were given a suite on arrival. We also ate in the restaurant in the evening and felt that although it initially looked pricey, the food was very good and represented good value for money.
We will definitely use this hotel if in Southampton again, particularly as it is so close to the cruise terminal (we walked with our cases)

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Twojax Pre cruise stay
We have stayed several times before going on a cruise, usually taking the cruise package, it's a nice comfotable way to start the holiday. Park the car and leave it in their parking area until you come back. A bonus is that you do not have to leave your car keys so when returning by taxi you can get your cases from the cab straight into your car.
Another bonus is the checkout time is midday so no rushing about it makes breakfast time more relaxing.
All the staff have been friendly and courteous on all our stays and that includes when we have needed to contact them by telephone.
The reason for the average star rating is basically because although it suits us fine for a pre holiday stop, for longer the lack of amenities in the room which is very comfortable it would put us off I.e. no fridge or safe and the limited restaurant menu would make us think again.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Mike1960 Ideal location
We stopped overnight in Southampton on our way to catch our cruise ship. In that respect the Holiday Inn is perfectly located; we could see the port from our window.
Finding the place presented one small problem as the postcode entered into our Sat Nav took us to a dock gate some distance away. We were pointed in the right direction by a passerby who informed us it happens all the time!
Reception was quick and easy and our room was clean, tidy and well presented.
The weather was bad on our arrival so we stayed in the hotel and found the restaurant good value for money with a wide choice available on the menu. Breakfast the following morning was equally as good with plenty of options.
Our only question would be why does Holiday Inn charge for overnight car parking? You're using their hotel facilities and hardly likely to arrive on foot.

As we have come to expect on our visits to this hotel the service and food is always excellent. A good dinner menu with plenty of choices, the breakfast was good, again plenty of choice and all freshly cooked and hot. Indeed the breakfast has become the highlight of the visit for me!
Our next visit is in June and I am already looking forward to it.

This has got to be one of the best hotels i've stayed in and i've stayed in many. Six of us were going on a mini cruise and decided to stay here the night before the cruise. Every one of us was extremely pleased with everything from the service of the staff to the cleanliness of the rooms. The staff are a credit and a valuable asset to the company, nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was plentiful, hot and a good variety of items. I would definitely stay at this hotel again and would highly recommend it to anyone staying in Southampton. Thank you Holiday Inn for a lovely stay.
