I enjoyed my stay at Urbandale Des Moines Holiday Inn Express. The Hotel was exceptional compared to my stay at Holiday Inn Vail. Stayed there last year and was very disappointed in the experience.

Our stay at the Holiday Inn in Vail was outstanding with one small exception, the lack of concierge knowledge at the Front Desk. The rooms outstanding, and clean, with attention paid to creature comforts. We were excited to be there, the Inn did not disappoint us except where it came to the Front Desk understanding of activities and dining establishments other than the three in the Hotel itself. If we knew of more activities in Vail we might have stayed an extra night, since we were traveling with only one goal, our destination, and with a few extra days to kill on the agenda. If I ever come to Vail again, you can bet I will be at the Holiday Inn, because that IS where to stay.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by stl2570 Awesome Price but ....
I got an awesome OFF SEASON rate, but the guy at the desk should have told us it was going to be hard finding places to eat. He only recommended the fast food places found at that exit. He should have told us to go back one exit or at least gave us a map of the area. For my cheap rate, I got a 'condo' room. It was just a regular size bedroom. Nothing special that I would consider a 'CONDO'. No frig or mw.
It also felt really strange to stay at a hotel that was empty. I never saw any other guests.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by jds72 Great local staff
I have been staying at this hotel for 5 years now. They always recognize me as a Platinum member, upgrade me whenever possible, and offer their help. The staff (being locals here in Vail) is great as they can give great advice and info on where to go and what to do. I will continue to stay here as long as this quality service continues.

Staff was friendly. Close to shopping and vail village and they provide shuttle service. Gregory the night auditor was a great concierge and directed us to good eats and fun things to do.

We were upgraded to a condo which was very spacious and comfortable, if a little dated in its furnishings. Staff was pleasant and accommodating, and the price was excellent for what we received.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by hellolenin Good value but getting old
Excellent rates typical of older HI properties.
Friendly efficient staff that recognize status.
Rooms are very clean and cozy but the furniture
and hotel appearance are very retro. Reminded me of
visiting holiday inns in the 1980's.
Not close to central vail but I walked it no problem.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by eloiro OK hotel in Vail
Great location but other than the free shuttles to the lifts, there is no facility in the hotel that is geared to skiers.
Staff are also very sticky with late checkout requests regardless of your Rewards Club membership status.
Rooms are decent at best and hot water takes a long time to come through in the shower .

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Trinco Worst two night stay ever!
Waited at Lionshead 50 minutes for a shuttle that takes 8 minutes! Called the front desk 3 times while waiting and was told he was just there, or he should be there any minute....NOT! Shuttle driver was indifferent, as was the front desk person, who told me to talk to the bus driver! No refills of the in room coffee! Was awoken by an entire floor of rowdy young guests who arrived at 1AM. They continued with their party, smoking in the floors "Party Room", running up and down the halls, doors slamming, unabated until 4AM. Front desk told me their security detail was on it! What a joke! Avoid this place at all cost!

I have such a great time skiing and you have made my comforts quite complete. Your always so helpful and I'm very pleased with the room the bed and tv and the girls that take care of the room. I use the hot tub which makes my legs ready for the next day - a big deal - and the shuttle is a nice plus. The people at the front desk are always so helpful and always so nice to me. Thank You for the wonderful stay. Carolyn R.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Ski Traveler Not what we expect from a Holiday Inn
Good location within walking distance to grocery stores & restaurants. Easy Access to Vail public buses, plus they provide free shuttle service. Other than that our stay was mediocre. The facility's outdated & the rooms Very Ratty! The front desk staff is unorganized & difficult to communicate with. 2 different people said our room would be ready within 30 mins, we came back an hour later, was rudely told by different staff that shouldn't have been said & we still had to wait another hour. Worse, our son arrived later, asked for us & Without Calling us or Verifying ID was handed a key & our room number!!?!! Checkout was equally unorginaized. It was SO confusing asking for a wine opener, & about dry cleaning we just had to laugh. Warm chocolate chip cookies after a day of skiing is a nice touch & the Sushi restuarant was Amazing!
But....This place needs work.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by EmilyCB 15 day stay
Upon arriving, I had to change rooms as the bathtub had no drain or fixture at all - just a large hole leading the pipes. My second room had a drain that wouldn't properly open or close - it was just kind of stuck open. The manager told me it worked and so I kept the room as there as, apparently, no other room available, but it never did work or hold water in the tub. The cleaning staff only visited me 3 times during my lengthy stay, and two of those times were at my direct request. Additionally, it was the loudest hotel I have ever, EVER been in. There appeared to be little or no stripping around the door - the light from the hallway and every little sound - from a footstep to words to anything - could be heard clearly inside the room. I was travelling for work and had no choice in my location; had I had some control, I would have definitely relocated. I will say that the two restaurants in the hotel were very good.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by RXTech Front desk staff are excellent
I've been staying here all winter 3-5 nights a week for business. Diego, front desk manager, has been exceptionally professional, pleasant and helpful overseeing my accommodations. Rooms are always clean and quiet. Hoping they upgrade every room to have a fridge and microwave for more convenience. Has been a great "home away from home" this season.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Chris168 Nice and comfortable stay!
Enjoyed my stay in a nice comfortable room (King Suite).
The highlights of the hotel were: own shuttle bus running every half hour to and from Lionshead, located next door to a Safeway, several restaurants nearby and free in-room wifi available. I requested a fridge which was in my room when I arrived. A really nice touch were the cookies provided in the afternoon for returning skiers / boarders.
With the shuttle bus the distance of the hotel to Lionshead (Eagle Bahn Goldola) was no problem at all - it almost felt like being within walking distance to the lifts, it was very convenient!
Staff were always willing to offer assistance, very courteous and diligent.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by shidlo Friendly staff, location convenient to ski slopes
I stayed in this hotel 3 times in the last 3 months, for a week each time skiing in Vail.
The staff, especially Diego, the front desk manager, are very friendly and responsive to my needs. The shuttle is running on time, and the drivers are very helpful.
The local cafe restaurant has very good food at reasonable prices, and the hotel
is in short walking distance to the supermarket and some fast food outlets.

Requested refrigerator and microwave at check-in. They arrived immediately. The food and bars inside the hotel are great! You can walk to grocery and liquor store. We rented ski equipment inside the hotel, so convenient. Appreciated the hotel shuttle to Vail. Loved our king executive king room with balcony. Would definitely go back.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Yampa Upgrade - NO upgrade; pack - unpack
I have been staying at this property for years using rewards points and have been upgraded to a condo the past four years. Several other family member typically join me at the hotel and having one condo between us allows us to gather for après ski and some meals. This year there is a new General Manager and point value not only increased by 10,000 points but I was given an upgrade and then had it taken away the day before arrival. Upon arrival I managed to get an upgrade if I paid a nightly fee which I agreed to (said fee was never charged in the end) for a few nights then had to move to a lesser room the 4th night. (pack and unpack) I was promised the upgrade again for the fifth night so I packed but the upgrade did not materialize - unpack. The sixth night I did get the upgrade - pack & unpack - which was nice other than the packing thing as I had to pack the next morning for check-out. Keep in mind that Vail is a ski resort and packing and unpacking each day can be quite a chore as one has multiple sets of clothing types depending on the activity and time of day. Also, each morning is hectic enough without packing just trying to make the early shuttle for the best skiing.
While I did have the General Manager of the hotel where I keep a suite 24/7, 365 days/year for the past six (6) years in a row call this GM to help make my case, her efforts seemed to fall on deaf ears and while I did figure out who the GM was in Vail, he never introduced himself.
The lesson here is that just because I am treated like royalty at the hotel where I spend a great deal of money, I will no longer believe that earning literally millions of points at one property will translate into preferential treatment at other properties, regardless of IHG's marketing efforts attempting to convince me otherwise. I can hear their response now that upgrades are only given when available and things can change, etc. etc but allow me to respond in kind and will listen with my deaf ears.
The bottom line here is that my vacation time is much too precious to risk by trusting IHG's guidelines for treating Platinum members and I will avoid doing so in the future.

Bad service and attention specially from the manager. They gave me a handicap room and in a week they did not want to give a normal room. The reason is a mystery for me

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by MFerrer A bargain for the area
Had a wonderful time visiting this location. Staff was very accommodating and knowledgeable of the area. If you asked for a good local place to eat, they would offer you several locations with directions ( all of which we're not the touristy restaurants ). Excellent food too I might add. They also have three restaurants on the premises and two with bars. The rooms seem to need some updating as they are a little outdated and are showing some signs of needing a face lift. Nothing that would keep me from staying here again though. For your best comfort, I would recommend booking one of the 'king condo' rooms. They come with full kitchens, fire place, balconies, full bathroom and a powder room. They also have upgraded mattress that sleeps wonderfully. Definitely worth the price.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by IwenttoVail Apex Holiday Inn is terrific
I was very satisfied with my 4 day stay at the Apex Holiday Inn in Vail. Excellent service and terrific housekeeping. Friendly shuttle drivers. The big Safeway store is a two minute walk for anything you are in need of. My king bed standard room was large and I was given a fridge and microwave. Excellent bathroom and water pressure. No highway noise. The hotel is going to a new cable service soon which means a popular morning three hour long Vail and ski information program can be seen. I recommend this Holiday Inn.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by avidskiier A complete disappointment
First, let me say that both my husband and I are platinum members of IHG. Our family usually loves Holiday Inn hotels but this one was a complete bust. At check in we were told that kids do not eat free although the app had a photo of the hotel with a kids eat free banner across the top. When we showed them and asked about it they refused to do anything. We were told we could go ask the restaurants if our kids could have free food.
Next came the issue with a mouse in our room, and mouse droppings in the morning on the bed our kids were sleeping on. When we told them, they said that they don't have mice and that someone must have brought it in with their ski gear since mice can't live in Colorado in the winter. Again, nothing was done about this.
The clincher of the entire stay was that at check out we were charged for a room that we had booked with points through an airline. My husband spent the next 90 minutes dealing with the manager of the hotel who was completely out of line. First, he charged our credit card we had given at check in. Then he went to our IHG account and charged the credit card linked with it and told us that it was not our credit card at all. Finally, he told my husband that he had two days to figure it out with the airline or he would send a collection agency after us because he was going to get paid for the room one way or another. So, the next day another 60 minutes was spent with the airline (who was completely shocked that my husband was the one dealing with it). It was solved very quickly when they figured out that the hotel had put in the wrong code when redeeming our certificate. Two and a half hours of vacation were wasted for their mistake. Of course, the same manager who threatened us, never called to apologize! This man should not be working in customer service.
This hotel, its employees and our experience did not live up to any of the standards we have seen at other Holiday Inn and Holiday Inn Express hotels. It was so bad that I question our loyalty to this brand.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by pamk1 Absolutely Love the Place
This is a truly wonderful hotel. The room was great. Yes, an older hotel but that only gave it character. The place is well maintained and clean. The staff was extremely helpful. The sauna area is wonderful. The hot tub, wet sauna, and heated outside pool (even in the winter) were perfect after a long day of skiiing, and I won't forget to mention the shuttle service from the hotel to the Vail ski lodge (or anyplace else you care to venture in Vail). That was a real convenience! I truly loved the place. I can't wait to get back there. Thanks so much you guys for the great holiday!!

I stayed almost 2 weeks, working while in Vail. The staff was very considerate of my oddball hours, and I had my dog with me, and that was a great comfort. Upon check-in for such a long stay, I realized I could really use a refrigerator. Diego at the front desk had one dropped in my room within the hour! All restaurants on property were fun AND delicious! Thanks so much, hope to be back again!

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Jmzb Expensive and low quality
I requested the government rate and the clerk gave me $5 off (about $125 to $120). Other Holiday Inns have a much better government rate (about $77). It took forever for the clerk to get me checked in which was super frustrating because it was incredibly late and I was very tired. They also had no gift package for Priority club members. I requested a comb the next morning and it took the same clerk about 5 minutes to find one. At one point he just told me they are out. Then he looked down and saw them. Clerk seemed very incompetent and the price was way to high for the low quality experience.

I had knee surgery, and was staying at this venue during rehab.
The staff were exceptionally warm, helpful, and friendly.
They would drive me twice a day to hospital for my rehab, and sometimes outside their shift hours.
They would help me with my medical equipment, topping it with ice each day.
I love the hospitality in this place.
Definitely recommend staying there.
