After an extensive search, I took a shot at staying in here. We were so happy with the experience. Everything was perfect: the comfort of the beds, cleanliness of the rooms and the facility in general, the pool; the location, and the friendly staff. The breakfast included in the price was better than your average complimentary breakfast with hot choices. I would absolutely recommend this place to friends.

This is a fairly new property and you know what you get with HIE. Front desk is congenial. Housekeeping folks seem less enthusiastic when I greeted them in hallways. The poor breakfast lady is overworked for the volume of mouths that flow through the morning meal. We did not want to stay in Key West and this property is ideally situated for exploring middle keys and 90 minutes or less from Key West for a day trip. They have a really nice restaurant behind the hotel, Tarpon Bay, I think. It is nicely appointed and sits on their marina. But, we did not eat there. I wish the hotel would have incentivized me to go with the family with a coupon or such. We were simply other places at meal time. Pool was fine. Families with young kids using it spaaringly. The tour desk offered up some activities from the marina behind the hotel, but I wish their would have been something like a kayak familiarization 1 hour try out. It was necessary to sign up for 3 hours. I did not want to do that in case the wife or kids did not take to it. The Bahia Honda state park is close and costs $5 I think for a car. Nice beaches and snorkeling from public beach. They have a great marina and offer kayak rentals and pontoon snorkel cruises. Also, there is a great free county beach, just at the far end of the 7 mile bridge, on the Atlantic side, called Veterans Park. You can wade out on sand for hundreds of yards. Just stay on the obvious sand paths, and don't step on any sea grass. Jellyfish are camouflaged as grass and are laying eggs in the seascape. Best frivolous expenditure on Marathon: Do the 20 minute helicopter tour from the Marathon Airport over the 7 mile bridge. It was exhilarating and we got to see sharks, turtles and rays, $120 pp. Also, a really nice cafe' on Big Pine Key, The Square Grouper serves up fresh fare. Not overpriced

We stayed for 2 nights and would definitely go back. Convenient location with great water views. Loved the restaurant next door - we went 4 times during our 3 day stay.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Terry08 Mother and daughter's vacation for mother's 81st birthday
My mother sister and I went to the Florida Keys for my mom's 81st birthday from August 4th through the 8th. We stayed in Marathon as it is in the center of the keys so it was within 50 miles to travel in either direction.
We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites. We had a room with two queen beds, a couch and table, microwave and sink. We had a beautiful view of the canal and pool. The room was clean and spacious. I was recognized as a priority club member when we arrived and received 2 bottles of water. I read previous reviews that the walls were thin and you could hear everything through them.
That was not true as we did not hear anything in our room.
The beds were very comfortable and the price was great.
We went down to the pool and it also was very relaxing and clean.
The breakfast was pancakes, sausage, biscuits, hard boiled eggs, sweet rolls, yougart, cereal, milk, coffee, hot tea and juice.
One day they made sausage gravy for the biscuits. It would have been nice to alternate bacon and sausage as all the other Holiday Inn Express's I have stayed in do but I am sure it is easier to make the sausage than the bacon. Everything was plentiful and you didn't have to wait for the food to be refilled.
There is a restaurant, Tarpon Creek, right out behind the hotel and we had lunch there one day and it was great.
We also walked across the street and ate dinner at the Island Fish Company. The food was good here also. We also ate dinner at the Sunset Grille just before the 7 mile bridge. This is a great restaurant to bring your children to as they have a swimming pool right next to the outdoor tables so they can swim while you eat or drink. I will be sure to bring the grandchildren here the next trip to the keys.
We drove just down the road to Sweet Savannah's for ice cream. It was definately worth the trip and we also got some homemade cookies that were delicious.
We went to Sombrero Beach which is a beautiful beach. There is no charge to go here. There are picnic tables and a playground next to the beach. The water there is so clear and it was so warm it felt like bath water.
We drove to Key West and took the trolley tour. It takes 1 hour to ride the complete tour. The driver tells the history of Key West which is very interesting. We went on the GlassBottom Boat. The ride was great but you don't see any fish just coral. Once you get out to sea they tell you about the coral and that you will only see small fish. It was a nice boat ride but wouldn't do it to see fish. The captain of the boat called the Hot Tin Roof in Mallory Square and made reservations for us for my mom's birthday dinner. I did not expect anything like that in the keys. The dinner was great and the sunset was beautiful.
We also went to the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory which is very interesting. We enjoyed it so much we went back the next day. It was so relaxing and the butterflies are beautiful.
We had a great time in the Keys and would definately stay at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites again. I would recommend this hotel to everyone. Great hotel and great location.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by JazzyPhil Not restful
Room was clean and service was average. I was in the Keys house hunting, so I chose Marathon because it was middle ground.
Normally I stay in Key West and love my stays their.
My problem with my stay was the noise level. In the room next to me the occupant had the TV on until 2 in the morning and snored when he or she finally went to sleep. needless to say my rest was interrupted. Also their was only one elevator for a very long building. We were at the back end and chose to take the stairs and park out back .
Also, I do not know if the Restaurant/bar in back is owned by the hotel or not, but we had one meal and drinks one evening. The food was OK, we went to the bar afterwards for a couple of drinks and was not pleased with the male bartender. I ordered a frozen drink which tasted virgin and it was set in front of me with the drinks running over the sides with no bar napkin. I had to ask for one. The bar top was not being kept clean.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Sailboatcruiser Too much money for the value
This hotel is way, way overpriced. We had to stay here because of an emergency and did not have time to look around much. It was a no frills average room, good bed. The next day we found hotels of equal or better value at 2/3rds the cost with more frills and even a kitchenette.
The staff simply didn't care about much of anything. No smiles anywhere.
Marathon is an old fashion key, mainly used by Floridians and locals. It is not Key West by any means. I have stayed in national chain hotels in Key West for less money.
Very disappointed and angry.

We stayed here while visiting friends in the Keys. I was disappointed we had no view of the ocean. Great restaurant next door. Behind the hotel was jet ski rentals, boat rentals and kayak rentals.
The pool was nice, but only 4ft deep. Plenty of lounging chairs.

Checking in was no problem at the time we got there - but around 6-7pm only 1 person on desk - 3 or 4 people waiting to check in and 2 -3 people needing to ask questions including myself. Had asked earlier for a fridge for my daughter's insulin ( have not been to a HI Express before with no fridge in room) - was told one would be put in the room - went out for a few hours and came back...no fridge. When I went down to desk, had to wait as only 1 person on desk and was told they do not have fridges in the rooms - only in the suites! When I said we were told that one would be put in the room I was told we do not have any fridges. They would not put the insulin in the hospitality fridge unless it was on ice....which would ruin the insulin. I was lucky that we had a special travel pak for keeping insulin cool for 48 hours -( the Frio pak - for any diabetics reading this!) . I went down the following morning to ask again and a few hours later....there was a fridge in my room. Go figure?! Breakfast was only egg , no bacon, no sausage only tea biscuit and grits plus the usual bread, bagels etc. Overall the stay was clean but for price have stayed in better! Front desk needs more staff on between 4 and 10pm

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Jpower Great hotel, but the staff aren't very friendly
I feel that the hotel is very clean and a great place to stay, but the 2 guys working the front desk when I checked in weren't very friendly. The female who works the front desk was very friendly and accommodating. The guys who were working the front seemed to always be in a rush and were overall rude and arrogant. I would recommend for someone to stay at the hotel I just would suggest to be prepared to be rushed and not treated with respect if you get the 2 guys I got at the front desk.

No luggage carts on check-in.... waited and finally gave up and lugged everything to the second floor. Hotel employee was looking for carts; inconsiderate guests must have had them in their rooms. Same situation on check out... no carts to be found, my wife checked each floor, so again they had to be in some one's room.
Couldn't get seated in the breakfast area. Food selection pretty well gone.
No ice in the ice machine.
Very noisey hotel. Sound proofing between floors and rooms is poor. People above us were walklling heavily until 1am; group next door was very loud until late. Kids running in the hall.
Slow elevator with long waits.
Pool was crowded with rowdy kids.
I can't recall complaining about a hotel before... this stay really
was annoying. I'd have to think twice about staying again.

Nice, clean facility. Great breakfast, nice decor. Staff was prompt and friendly. A smidgeon pricey for what I would term a "normal stay" but other hotels were more expensive due to the area.

Our reservation was not correct (even though we booked over the phone 3 months prior). We were not compensated or moved for this mistake and we called corporate. Our room smelled like mildew. Walls between rooms are very thin. The breakfast is limited, if you like to eat healthy forget about it.
The pool is nice as is the adjoining restaurant (good for a nice cocktail).

Have stayed here two summer trips in a row. Perfect place especially if you are out and about all day and want to come home to a nice a/c'd clean room. I actually left my safe wide open on my last stay with a bunch of cash and a rolex inside, and when i came back the room was spotless and everything was still in the safe. I think that's fantastic. If you have kids, you can't beat the free breakfast. It's way better than your typical continental breakfast. Eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy, oat meal, cereals, pancake machine...coffee, milk, juice, etc. The staff was great. The restaurant that is attached in the back is average. Pretty decent wood fired pizza. Overall, this is a great place to stay and the location is perfect in Marathon.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by OregonMattandLori An average stay at a fairly reasonable price
It's a Holiday Inn Express, pretty much fits that style, so no Keys flavor, pretty much cookie cutter. Newer, but not as nice as some others we've stayed in. Very clean, nice rooms, not great but okay. The walls were quite thin and adjacent room noises were very loud. Nice pool area, good location, but a bit further North in Marathon. Nice marina with rentals and tours. Nice open air restaurant on property.

We stayed the weekend for the second time with part of the family at this hotel and really spent a pleasant weekend, its comfortable rooms, clean and well maintained. The pool area with a friendly atmosphere, make this place ideal for a break. The continental breakfast is not ideal but is acceptable. With good personal attention, this hotel deserves a mention, as a good place to go and share some family time, so we would go again anytime. !

We recently stayed at this property in Marathon and was very disappointed. The room was fairly comfortable and breakfast was satisfactory. We noticed a musty smell throughout the stay. The staff would spray a deodorizer after the morning refresh. I understand the climate in the keys it will be a challenged to maintain the dryness. The biggest concern was not having a refrigerator!
To me this was on cheap side of this property. In the warm climate they should of had a fridge in each of the rooms. We inquire about a small fridge and they responded, we have them in our suites only, seriously??
The other concern NO Laundry!
Matter of fact no public laundry in Marathon. You had to travel to Big Pine Key for Laundry services.

We wanted to visit Key West but only for a day, so we decided to stay in Marathon for the first time. I found the Holiday Inn Express for a really good deal and jumped on it. The hotel was conveniently located and very clean. Wish we could have taken advantage of some of the water activities taking place out back but we didn't have that much time. The restaurant out behind the hotel smelled incredible but was a little too pricey for the 4 of us. The room was great, clean, comfortable, and spacious. The walls were a little thin or the neighbors were extremely loud. Since we only heard people on one side, I'm going with they were extremely loud. We only took advantage of the free breakfast the day we left but it was good. Lots of carbs however so I stuck with the eggs. We would gladly return again.

We booked this as an overnight stay on the way to key West but had a better time in Marathon. Right off the highway, new facility, good rates. You have access by foot to two rental companies for water activities, our were cancelled due to the weather. The pool is huge, clean and along the water. We were upgraded to a partial water view room too as priority members. Sparky's and Castaway's are great places to eat close by with good prices! Sombero beach is also right around the corner. The breakfast was delicious! Wonderful stay!

Nice clean room and the service was great. The breakfast was good and simple , so we could get out to the water. The area was keep up and the son enjoyed it for a short time. I would like to see a small frig in the room. The meals at the Tarpon creek are good and the wife would have like to saved the uneaten portion of her meal for for the 14 year snack machine. Over all good rooms and would do it again.

This is a nice hotel with comfortable rooms and good staff. The noise I could hear in my room was unbelievable. It was as if the people next door (on both sides) were in the room with me. Noise proofing was obviously nonexistent. I requested a room change which was granted , but it made no difference. Noise from other room's doors slamming at all hours was startling.

My 11 year old daughter and I stayed at this hotel for three nights and we were very pleased. The staff was very friendly and professional even when very busy. The pool area was immaculate and beautiful. Very nice tiki restaurant on premises as well as gift shop. The complimentary breakfast was perfect for us, and the eating area is very clean and nice. Our room was very comfortable and clean. The hallways were all very clean. This was our first visit to Marathon, but we plan to return next year and will stay at this Holiday Inn Express again.
