Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Quiet room overlooking park On our recent stay, we found the room to be clean and comfortable and the service was great. We enjoyed the adjoining balcony overlooking the park and the peace and quiet at night. The hotel was located within walking distance of many shops and restaurants. We noticed that some of the common areas need a little attention, like the soiled carpeting by the elevators. Overall, the room was worth the price. May 27, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Property I was very satisfied with my stay at the Holiday Inn Express hotel this visit. May 19, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Staff in charge not helpful Staff wasn't able to make concessions for special requests. Heard the usual, "I am not in charge and my manager won't be here until Monday" type response. VERY EXPENSIVE FOR WHAT YOU GET. GO ELSEWHERE! May 17, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Rooms dirty, hotel not enough linens, sloppy image Reception indifferent. Rooms Not clean, hotel poorly maintained, not enough linen inventory, service indifferent.!! May 14, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Surprisingly pleased The room was not only comfortable, but even smelled good. The amenities were very nice and I'd certainly not have a problem in booking this hotel again. May 10, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Very outdated. This hotel needs to be torn down and rebuilt!. The beds were terribly uncomfortable, the whole room was old and dirty looking. Trying to put on make-up in the dressing area was impossible since the lighting was so terrible. We stayed four nights and felt the price was way too high for value received. We have stayed in numerous Holiday Inn Expresses all over the US.. This one in Solvang gives the brand a very bad name. We will not be staying there again! April 27, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Solvang Review Excellent stay, that arrangement for finding a room is a little different and not the easiest, but room service and all were very good. Would stay there again for sure. April 7, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Affordable Solvang The HIE is located at one end of the main thoroughfare in downtown Solvang. Ample parking, good room rates, clean and spacious rooms, free breakfast, pool, helpful staff - and everything you want to see in Solvang is within a five to ten minute walk! Generally more affordable than the boutique hotels in town, with perhaps a touch less quirky charm, we like staying here and have told our out-of-town guests to check it out for our destination wedding this fall. Coffee/tea pot and supplies in the room, plus a fridge and microwave make it easy to stash pastries and leftovers from the local eateries and bakeries for enjoying later too. Bed was clean and comfortable, as was the room and bathroom, which is refreshing at this price. Hotel feels very safe and hallways are room key protected for extra security. Good hotel for families, couples or singles - Highly recommended! April 5, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent accomodations It is the best value for the money. Rooms are nice, clean and comfortable. Staff is extremely friendly. And it is convenient to all the shopping and eating places. I have stayed there twice and will again in the future. April 2, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Central location.. The holiday Inn is a great deal for Solvang...We come to the same hotel every year. March 31, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Queen Loft Room Suite Love the set up of your Queen Loft Room Suite, it's roomy very clean and the bed are comfortable. When we called in for an additional blanket late in the evening, they give it to us in just like 10 minutes. The location is very clean and right in the heart of Solvang. Will definitely go back and stay at this place. March 7, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by SMOKEY ENVIRONMENT AND RUDE MANAGEMENT I made the reservation on the day we booked in for two nights by phone and paid with a cc over the phone. Upon arriving we were not given the top floor nor the view of the mountains as assured. We stayed two nights. The first night was ok but the other building smelled of cigarette smoke, not ours. The next night in the middle of the night after going to sleep our room smelled totally smokey. By morning everything was saturated with the smell of cigarettes. Everything we had needed to be washed or dry cleaned. When we complained they said we should have told them when it happened and we should have left....in the middle of the night. The desk manager said we had made the reservation online otherwise they would have refunded us: that was not true. I am not sure how the phone call resulted in a cc payment online. The management was not helpful nor apologetic and when I called them the next day as the daytime manager was there, he was very rude and said to go ahead and deny the charge with the credit card company. That it was not his problem. He would not listen nor compromise. were given no paperwork ultimately and not emailed any either. February 28, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Value for your Money This hotel is located very close to all the wonderful venues Solvang has to offer. The staff was exceptional and the room was very comfortable. I do wish I had brought my own pillow. Even their soft pillow is too firm. The scrambled eggs and bacon were good but wish they had a waffle maker instead of a pancake maker. Nobody used the pancake maker. The Danish pancakes at Paula's Pancakes 3 doors down are to die for. February 23, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great hospitality & service We got stranded at 3am in the middle of Solvang (we were supposed to stay with a friend). All we could see were 'no vacancy' signs - we then spotted the Holiday Inn Express down the street. Blake was incredibly helpful. He gave us a room right away and it was clean & well kept. We are coming back to Solvang again next month and we will definitely stay at the Holiday Inn Express! Oh and the giant patio A PLUS!!!! February 15, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wonderful Experience As a platinum rewards member, I've stayed at a lot of Holiday Inn Express hotels and this one was probably the most enjoyable. Solvang is a great town to visit and the hotel is an easy walk to everywhere in the town. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful, the room was comfortable and the breakfast was very good. I intend to visit again. February 8, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great hospitality on a very busy weekend in Solvang We arrived at our hotel not sure where to park because the parking lot appeared completely full. We hadn't realized it was Restaurant Week. We were graciously offered the one remaining parking spot....the 15-minute unloading space....to use for the night. We were then guided into the office to check in, and guided over to the elevator to get to our room. The hotel is a sprawling pair of buildings that appears to be built into the side of a hill. Not surprising, since Solvang is, after all, in the mountains. Our room was obviously an older room that was slowly being modernized. Having said that, it was comfortable, had a very nice television, and plenty of room for us to move around. I was impressed by the layout and the use of available space. We ordered dinner in, and when it arrived with no utensils, one of the hotel staff brought us a surplus of utensils and extra napkins. I am very impressed with this hotel, and would gladly recommend it to anyone and everyone. I can't comment about the breakfast, as we didn't eat the complimentary breakfast, opting to get an early start on our day. February 8, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Phantom vending machines and open electrical panels It's an older property, probably converted from a Holiday Inn, so it's bound to seem run down and out of date. That being said, upon arrival to the room you feel like you are walking into an oven because the staff turned the heat up all the way. The electrical panels are exposed in the hallways which wouldn't be an issue if they were not UNLOCKED and OPEN giving anyone walking by access to turn off the power to your room at will. Also the vending machine sinage in areas with no vending machines is a bit, i dunno,,, odd. Just a few things to work on. January 29, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by great location I needed two rooms for our group and one needed to be a wheelchair accessible room. We were able to get two rooms next to each other. Rooms are very comfortable. I am not a big fan of the sink outside the bathroom but it worked out well enough. Great to have a mini-fridge and microwave in the room as well. Super location to walk around Solvang shops and restaurants. January 19, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Nice room and beautiful surroundings The overall impression of the hotel is good. We had a room with a park view, which was probably quieter than one towards the street. The room was tidy, nicely furnished and has a large balcony. The breakfast included is the same offered in all Holiday Inn Express hotels, but it is still fairly good. Solvang is a pretty nice town, there is quite a lot to see. There are a lot of Danish houses, stores and restaurants. January 14, 2013
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Peculiar but functional It seems to be 3 separate buildings joined together on the side of a hill, with 2 parking garages in the basements. We stayed on the first floor. The elevator opens to an outside landing, so we had to walk outside in the cold rainy weather, and then the door to the corridor requires the room key again, which was a bit awkward with luggage on the first trip. The breakfast room was nice, with the good assortment of food that Holiday Inn Express is known for. There were 3 separate stairs to the same first floor landing (2 off the lobby, and 1 directly to the outside). Parking might be confusing. The exit is near the first traffic light in town, where traffic on the highway is backed up at peak hours. January 8, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wonderful room. Very comfortable bed and pillows. Nice view from windows. Spacious room. Fantastic breakfast. Great location. January 6, 2013
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Would Not Come Again We come yearly to Solvang with 2 other couples for New Years & stay 2 nites. We made our reservation 6 months in advance & printed out our reservation confirmations for 3 rooms. About a month before our stay, we called to confirm our reservations & there was some confusion, but we managed (we thought) to straighten it out. We printed out 3 new reservation confirmations for 3 rooms. About 5 days before we left, a single confirmation was e-mailed to us with no explanation. My husband called to inquire about it, and there ensued a 45 minute long distance phone conversation with this hotel and Holiday Inn, Inc. We were issued 3 new confirmations with different numbers than our previous 3 reservations. We have traveled a great deal for many years and have never had such problems with making simple reservations. We had a "loft suite," which consisted of the entry doorway to a wide, long dark hall with no lighting. Within this hall on the darkest side, was the closet, with no light. A bit further down on the other side was a bathroom. At the end of the hallway was a small room with couch, a coffee table, tv & a few lamps. Against the wall was a narrow tiny stairway up to a "loft" which contained nothing but a bed, tv, end tables & lamps. No bathroom, no closet. There was, however, a doorway right next to the bed leading out into the main hall of the building, thus ensuring you would hear anybody going up or down the hall. You had to leave the light on in the downstairs "room" as you could not see to go down the tiny stairway in the dark without turning on a light & waking your partner. Our friends' rooms were basic bedrooms. They had problems with their heat not working and had to call the repairman twice in one room and once in the other room. The noisy heater kept one couple up both nights. The rooms were fairly inexpensive - otherwise I would avoid this place like the plague. January 6, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Staff needs to be friendly Staff can use some help on Customer Service. I used Points on the stay and they act like they are doing a favor letting you stay there. The day "help" were the worst and not very friendly. January 5, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Problems Heater was blowing cold air off and on and the television had to be hooked up. Our last stay with this hotel was much better than this one. December 19, 2012
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Reservations as confirmed not honored on our arrival We have stayed at the Solvang Holiday Inn Express several times in the last few years. We used to stay here when it was still the Danish Inn. The last two times we had made reservations and which were confirmed by E-mail were not honored. Two years ago the King size non smoking room had not been held for us and we were put into a loft type room that required us to climb stairs to go to bed. Not what we had reserved. In November, 2012, we had reserved two King bed rooms and were told that we could have only one king and one with two queen beds. Since I brought a copy of the confirmed reservation we were eventually allowed the two king bed rooms. Because I have no confidence that we would have the type of room we reserved waiting for us, I would probably not try to stay at this Holiday Inn Express again. Once we were given the rooms we had reserved, our stay was pleasant and we could recommend this as a place to stay with the caveat that the rooms you reserved may not be available. November 29, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Location and Price for Area The Price and Location of this Property is fair. It was nice to see they did not pick-up the Continental Breakfast at 11AM Sharp as Check-out is 11AM and we were still able to sit and enjoy without having to rush. Only negative was Parking in the Late Hours. We had to park in street. November 23, 2012
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Comfortable room, good value. Helpful staff, good advice about local restaurants, made our stay enjoyable. November 19, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great stay Really friendly & helpful staff. Easy access to freeway and walking to town sites including great food and entertainment. November 3, 2012
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Place! Our room was amazing, everything is within easy strolling distance in Solvang, the lotion smells good, and the breakfast is AWESOME! Eggs, cinnamon rolls, cereal, yogurt, juice, coffee, bacon, etc. Wow. I would definitely go back. November 2, 2012
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Tired Property We stayed at this property several years ago. It was tired then (albeit priced as a better value then) and it's still tired. And, while it's been marginally enhanced, it is in need of more than cosmetic improvements now. The furnishings are of flea market quality, the carpeting was in need of cleaning or replacement, the sliding glass doors were itched with scale(?), which obstructed the "view", the screen door was bent, and the overall quality of towels and linens was not up to what we have experienced in our numerous HI stays elsewhere. The night before, we had stayed at the Holiday Inn in Santa Maria. What a lovely property, and our room was fabulous! We booked with HI in Solvang on short notice in response to a family death and funeral, and learned the hard way that a "valley view" (at least on the second floor of the building where we were) really only was indicative of the side of the building the room was on, because our "view" was into several very dense oak trees. Upon checking in, we attempted to be relocated to another room, but none were available. Our bill was "reluctantly" reduced by $20 per night, but the overall experience was still distasteful. We will not be staying at this property in the future. October 27, 2012
