Portland, Maine, is a waterfront city known for its historic fishing wharves and lovely outdoor scenery. No matter what brings you to the city, you'll find attractions that are sure to showcase the beauty of the region.
To get a feel for what Portland used to look like, head to the historic Old Port district. This area is known for its fishing piers, cobblestone streets and 19th-century brick buildings. You can go shopping at one of the many boutiques, grab a bite to eat at one of the restaurants or enjoy some nightlife at a popular bar or pub.
There are also several museums around the city worth a tour. The Portland Museum of Art is the largest in the state and has over 22,000 pieces from the 18th century to the present. To stay in the heart of all the action, consider one of the hotels located in downtown Portland. There are also luxurious hotels just a few blocks from the waterfront. If you head farther inland, you'll find plenty of budget-friendly hotel options that are still just a short drive from all the popular attractions.
If you plan on driving to Portland, Interstate 295 runs just west of the downtown area. Additionally, U.S. Highway 302 can take you directly into the city. If you're flying to Portland, the Portland International Jetport is 4 miles west of the city.
