Visiting Bangkok – A City Guide
With its colourful tuk-tuks, soaring skyscrapers and golden temples, Bangkok is a feast for the senses. The Thai capital’s exhilarating mix of neon-lit shops, colourful street markets and tranquil monastery courtyards remains a seamless and endlessly fascinating balance of old and new.

Bangkok: city layout and top attractions
Much of today’s Bangkok lies east of the Chao Phraya river, with Thonburi district to the west. Most major sights including the Lak Muang shrine are in central Rattanakosin, once a moated royal compound.

To the north, Banglamphu is a tourist hub where you'll find many of Bangkok’s most popular hotels, and Dusit is home to the royal family and the government. Beside the river, Yaowarat is also known as Chinatown.

Stretching east and south from the old city, modern Silom and Sukhumvit contain countless high-rise offices and many Bangkok hotels, while Siam Square is packed with shopping malls.

Start any city tour at the Grand Palace, built as a royal residence in the 18th century. Don’t miss the breathtaking Wat Phra Kaew, a 14th-century temple covered in gold that houses the Emerald Buddha. Across the river, the vertiginous pagoda at Wat Arun – the Temple of Dawn – is covered in glittering glass and porcelain.

The concierge recommends…

  • Admiring the mother-of-pearl feet of Wat Po’s 46-metre-long reclining Buddha, covered in auspicious symbols.
  • Being dazzled by Wat Traimit’s Golden Buddha, made from five tons of solid gold.
  • Haggling on the water during a tour of Damnoen Saduak, Bangkok’s floating market.

Eating Out in Bangkok
It’s hard not to eat well in Bangkok. Whether you order a simple noodle dish from a night market stall or a royal Thai banquet in an upscale air-conditioned restaurant, every meal will be freshly prepared using a very palatable blend of aromatic herbs and spices.

Thais love to eat outdoors. As evening begins, night market stalls fire up their woks all over the city, filling the air with mouthwatering smells. You’ll find no end of choice in the tourist district of Banglamphu. For sophisticated Bangkok regional specialities from renowned eateries, ranging from Thai-Chinese restaurants to typical street food vendors, visit the local’s favourite dining district of Chinatown.

Modern Sukhumvit and Silom are the places to head for more upscale restaurants, serving some of the world’s finest Thai food and global cuisines from French to Middle Eastern.

The chef recommends...

  • Tom yum goong: A spicy shrimp soup laced with lime juice, lemongrass and chillies that can pack quite a punch.
  • Gaeng daeng: Thai red curry, normally containing beef of chicken in a richly spiced coconut sauce.
  • Yam neua: A warm salad of thinly sliced beef tossed in onion, coriander, lime juice and chilli.
  • Gai pad krapow: Finely diced chicken stir-fried with Thai holy basil and chillies.

Shopping in Bangkok
Shopping is a popular pastime for both visitors and locals in Bangkok. There are countless markets where you can haggle over souvenirs, Thai gifts and handicrafts, and almost as many fixed-price shopping malls selling Western and Thai brands.

Small local stores and outdoor markets are dotted all across the city. You’ll find a high concentration of old-fashioned shops in Chinatown.

Sukhumvit’s glittering air-conditioned boutiques are the place to look for designer fashions, leather and silk. Modern shopping in Bangkok is focused on and around Siam Square. Among the many shopping malls here are Siam Paragon and CentralWorld, with almost 1,000 outlets between them.

Best night markets in Bangkok

  • Sprawling Chatuchak Weekend Market has around 15,000 stalls selling everything from antiques to herbs and spices at reasonable prices.
  • Open Thursday to Sunday, Rot Fai Market (Train Market) specialises in hard-to-find collectable items and memorabilia, from vintage cars to authentic period hippy clothing.
  • A tourist trap to some and a shopping mecca for others, Khao San Road in Banglamphu is where to head if you’re looking for local souvenirs and knick-knacks or a fashion bargain.

Culture & Nightlife in Bangkok
As the nation’s cultural capital, Bangkok has many of Thailand’s finest museums and galleries. At night you can experience everything from contemporary theatre and classical Thai dancing to craft beer pubs, unique gastro bars and glitzy nightclubs where DJs pump out the latest dance beats.

For a general overview of Thailand’s culture and history, take a tour of the Bangkok National Museum, first opened in 1874 to showcase the country’s art treasures.

After dark, Khao San Road has many lively bars, some of which have live music. Patpong’s raunchy bars have a notorious reputation, while those looking for more civilised nocturnal diversions should try the exclusive clubs and cocktail bars of Silom and Sukhumvit.

Best nightlife in Bangkok

  • Sip a cocktail with an unmatchable view from the 26th-floor, open-air Char Bar, which adorns the rooftop of Hotel Indigo Bangkok.
  • On the 39th floor of Silom’s Sathorn Square Building, Cé La Vi dance club has themed evenings that range from hip-hop to house and classic pop.
  • Both a bar and an arts space, WTF Bangkok serves drinks with tapas, accompanied by events that range from live music shows to poetry evenings.

Leisure in Bangkok
While shopping and temple-spotting sit at the top of most to-do lists in Bangkok, there are plenty of other distractions. From a river trip to a stroll in the park, the city offers something for every taste.

Bangkok’s green lung, Lumpini Park is a relaxing place to enjoy a picnic or rent a boat on its central lake. Alternatively, you can unwind with a sunset cruise down the Chao Phraya river.

At SEA LIFE Bangkok you can ride a glass-bottomed boat through a shark tank and gaze up at turtles from an underwater tunnel.

Easy day trips from Bangkok

  • Filled with spectacular natural, cultural and historical attractions, Ayutthaya – which was the capital of Siam before Bangkok – is only 90 minutes’ drive north of the capital. This beautiful province houses some of Thailand’s most-enduring ancient temples and palaces reflecting the country’s great cultural values.
  • An hour north of Bangkok beside the Chao Phraya river, Bang Pa-In Royal Palace was once the summer residence of Thai kings.

Great Value
By bpdogs
Since the area of this hotel is no longer a major tourist location the hotel rate reflects that. Yet the hotel is only 7 minutes walk from the Sky Train and is only 10-25 minutes or so from most [More] major places in Bangkok. The hotel is easy to find and has a very nice lobby and lounge. Most nights the bar has live music which is a nice touch. I was surprised though that there is no Gold/Platinum/Spire check in line. Only a sign that said IHG Rewards members but doesn't designate a special line. Checking in was smooth and easy but the front desk woman didn't bother to tell me there were TWO towers. She only told me where the elevators were. So of course I used the first elevator row I saw and wasted 10 minutes until I realized I wasn't in the right location on the 16th floor. Upon coming back into the lobby I found out there is a second tower further down the hall. The room looks newly reimbursed with a comfortable mattress and nice pillows. There are plenty of English channels on theTV. The electrical outlets have multi adapter plugs, no need to carry an adapter. Genius! The bathroom is decent and has a shower stall. The problem is like many other hotels, there is no electrical outlet for the hairdryer, only shavers. You must use the hairdryer in the room. During my stay I also had problems with the bathroom water temperature and pressure. After the first complaint to the front desk went nowhere, I talked to the manger and the problem was fixed, However, once again the next day the problem became worse and was fixed again after another complaint. I was never told what caused the problem's and why they re-appeared. The only other service issue I had was one of the doormen telling me to go right when I needed to go left to get to the sky train station. Luckily I realized fairly quick after double checking the map given to me by the hotel that he was wrong. The best service I received was from the night manager on duty. Unfortunately I lost the paper with her name. On the evening of the 10th there was no concierge so she spent 20 minutes helping me sort out where all the restaurants and attractions I was going to visit over the next 4 days were located and the best way to reach them. She helped make my trip so much easier. Finally on leaving for the airport the doorman summoned a taxi for me at 6 AM. When the taxi arrived the doorman said he wanted 500 Baht to the airport. I refused and insisted he use the meter which he did. Because of the time there was no traffic and the fare was only 238 Baht. Make sure you use the expressway and pay the 90 Baht in tolls Even with the problems I experienced I would definitely stay here again The value of the room rate and the quality of the hotel and room is a great deal in Bangkok [Less]

This is a good place to stay and very convenient to BTS station. The hotel room was quiet with quiet air conditioning. For a holiday inn Express, their breakfast offering is better than usual. [Less]
