Travelling in Chengdu – City Guide

Ever thought about going to Chengdu to experience its easy going and relaxed life style?

Drink a cup of tea with the locals in Kuanzhai Alley, try some Sichuan snacks at Jinli, and watch the unique Sichuan Opera face-changing show at the historic Wuhou Shrine. You'll also encounter the warm tones of the Bashu dialect, sample the wide range of hot and spicy flavors of the Sichuan region, and look up in wonder at the mesmerizing mix of skyscrapers and ancient monuments. Chengdu, the City of Abundance, and UNESCO certified City of Gastronomy, is sure to leave you with special memories.

The Ever-thriving City of Abundance

Chengdu was first founded in 5th century BC. Today, the city extends beyond the 6th ring road, and each district has its own unique charm and splendor. Within the 3rd ring you'll find bustling streets interlaced with new and old buildings, such as the Wuhou Shrine and various romantic and leisurely parks in Wuhou District. All kinds of delicious food can be savored in Jinniu District, Du Fu Thatched Cottage, Wenshu Monastery, and other impressive ancient relics can be found in Qingyang District, and the city's more modern and fashionable urban scenery can be found in Jinjiang District.

Yet, you may also opt to venture outside the 3rd ring, there you’ll find a vast area including Chenghua District, Doujiangyan etc. encircles the city like satellites around earth. Attractions in this part of the city, like the Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, Dujiangyan, and Mount Qingcheng, are hugely popular and attract thousands of visitors.

Don’t Miss the Following Destinations in Chengdu

Kuanzhai Alley is an excellent destination for the Chengdu traveller. Here you can explore the old style of the city, or just enjoy the leisurely and relaxing atmosphere there. Want to find some real local pleasures? Just stroll into a quiet courtyard, or sit on a cane chair by the street, then have a cup of tea, enjoy a piece of Kun Opera, and chat about memories of the old city. Forget about the world, and indulge yourself in this quiet and content moment.

What should top your “to-see list" as you travel in Sichuan?  It should absolutely be the adorable giant panda, China’s most precious national treasure. The Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, 10 km from the downtown area, is a world-renowned research center. You will find these adorable creatures gnawing on bamboo, napping on logs, or wandering around at their own pace. The center, founded in a dense forest of bamboo, is a perfect home for these wonderful animals.

Thanks to the song “Chengdu", sung by Zhao Lei, the “bistros" along Yulin Road came to be known throughout the whole nation. Though without natural beauty, Yulin is still visited by countless travelers, who come in search of exquisite viands and excellent wine, and the fascinating music and intoxicating poetry.

Travel Tips

You could either take a gourmet tour in Chengdu using a foodie’s map, or stroll about the city for a simple and relaxing experience.... Whatever activities one chooses to indulge in, they must refrain from rushing, and embrace the locals’ leisurely lives.

It is said that Jinli had made its name as long ago as the Han Dynasty. Now, the nationally renowned commercial street, made up of western Sichuan folk houses from the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, is open to the public. Along the twisting streets, you will see tea houses, inns, restaurants and more scattered throughout, and wonder at the tourists flooding along the waterfront or over the stone bridge.

As you pass through Jinli, you will see Wuhou Shrine, founded to commemorate the heroes of the Shu-Han Kingdom, including Zhuge Liang and Liu Bei. Those interested in the culture of the Three Kingdoms Period, or intrigued by stone inscriptions, should make sure to pay this site particular attention. From the “Stele of Shu-Han Prime Minister Zhuge Wuhou Shrine", to the vivid sculptures of the heroes of the Three Kingdoms, you will feel transported back to the war years.

If you feel like sampling all of Chengdu’s “Chinese time-honored" snacks, your perfect option is Chunxi Road, which features Zhong Dumpling, Lai Tangyuan, Han Steamed Bun, Chao shou, and more. The commercial district also has shopping malls and “time-honored” brands, attracting both locals and tourists. Hong Kong’s Tai Kung Pao newspaper has even said: “Where can one discover the city’s treasures? Chunxi Road. Where can one find the best fashion? Chunxi Road. Where can one admire beautiful women? Chunxi Road. No idea where to go? It has to be Chunxi Road!"

In the renowned city of Southwest China, deep in the bamboo, the River Watchtower sits on the water’s edge  - but it's not the only place of interest. Across the street is Sichuan University, one of the most beautiful institutes of learning in China. There you will find such protected historic buildings as “The Whiting Memorial Administration Building" and “The Lamont Library and Harvard-Yenching Museum", both designed in part by British architects, and built in the early 20th century. You’ll be fascinated by the buildings’ unique styles, both Chinese and Western, linking the human and natural, and representing the old and new.

Living a Slow Life in Chengdu

Chengdu redefines the concept of “slow life". From ancient streets and Qing-dynasty folk houses to contemporary boutique apartments setting the trends; from traditional Chinese houses to international luxury hotels in unique local styles.... Here in Chengdu, you can always find accommodation perfect for your needs.

If you choose to stay in Wuhou District, you can walk into the ancient streets to immerse yourself in old Chengdu, savoring the local food and experiencing folk customs. Wuhou Shrine, Jinli Street and many other attractions are also conveniently close-by. Adjacent to the bar street by Jiuyan Bridge, the flourishing IHG hotels could also be your most convenient choice.

If you would like to experience modern Chengdu, then the fashionable New Century Global Center could be an option. From the Paradise Island Ocean Park to the New Century Shopping Center, from the central business area to the IHG Hotel, the Global Center, as one of the largest buildings in the world, accommodates all kinds of needs, representing the heavenly slow life in modern Chengdu.

Shuangliu Airport is an hub in central China. It boasts numerous bus and subway transportation options, and is around 30 minutes drive from downtown Chengdu. Choosing a hotel here ¬ more convenient; moreover, the Times Outlets are just a stone’s throw away.

Shopping and Souvenir Hunting in Chengdu

As an ancient city that has retained its original name for over 2,000 years, Chengdu is now a financial and economic center of contemporary inland China. It boasts bustling international luxury shops, many modern and stylish shopping malls, a variety of Chinese time-honored brands, and old city shops wherever you may go.

Jinjiang District is the most bustling area in Chengdu. When strolling through, don’t be surprised at the raucous scenes – merchants’ hawking, buyers’ bargaining, and tourists making noise. Many branded stores, as well as the throngs of Chinese time-honored shops are all located here. The International Financial Center (IFC), known for the panda climbing its façade, and Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li, transformed from an old-fashioned building dated from the Republican period, are both very well-known and worth a visit, sporting varied upmarket boutique stores within.

As a commercial street dated back to the Xi Shu period, Jinli is a great place to shop for shadow puppets, masks, clay figurines, paper cuttings, painted gourds, and more. Do prepare yourself for surprises at the masses of small shops selling sophisticated handicrafts. Only 300 meters from Jinli, you can find the Tibetan ornaments street, where dozens of stores sell unique and well-made pieces rich with Tibetan flavor.

The New Century Global Center is by all odds a new landmark of Chengdu. Accumulating a variety of fast fashion and local brand shops, it is an ideal venue for one-stop shopping. Times Outlets, another large shopping venue, attracts countless visitors as well, as it has special offers on branded goods all year round.

Delicious Cuisine in Chengdu

The Sichuan cuisine, widely known as “hot, spicy, delicious and fragrant", is a popular with people throughout both China and even the world. From the hot and spicy Sichuan hotpot to the “fly eatery” (unique and cheap Sichuanese restaurants) on street corners, to world-renowned Sichuan-style signature dishes – Chengdu is a city that you may be reluctant to leave, simply due to the delicious food.

Once you arrive in Chengdu, you must rush to try a Sichuan-style hotpot, while drenched in sweat. There are more than a hundred kinds, like traditional Mao Du hotpot and the more modern Beef Tallow hotpot. Possible ingredients include all sorts of meats, from land, sea and air… any food can be added to the pot. You should also try the special sauces made from sesame oil, oyster sauce, broth, garlic, egg white, and other seasonings. The must-eat hotpots include "China Samite-Hot Pot”, “Hot Space”  which known for its heat and spice, and the famous “Shu Jiu Xiang" and “Da Zhai Men”. There are countless hotpot restaurants in Chengdu, among which you are bound to find your favorite.

House-special pancakes, Ye’er Ba, Tangyou Guozi, Xiao spring rolls, Longchaoshou, Dandan Noodles, Pork Lungs in Chili Sauce, Zhong Dumplings and more are on offer…. In the sheer variety you’ll definitely be able see evidence for the Chengdu people’s passion for gastronomy. Among the delicious food all over the city, the most famous destinations are undoubtedly the areas around Sichuan University and Southwest Jiaotong University - there one can truly eat to their heart’s content.

Not enjoying a “fly eatery”, would be an insult to the city. The melt-in-the-mouth Juecheng Taro Chicken, the Ming-Ting Restaurant once featured on the BBC, the mouthwatering Zhang-Niang Charcoal Barbecue, Xiao Tan Tofu that senior citizens of Chengdu favor the most.... Strolling through Chengdu, you will discover authentic Sichuan flavors everywhere, and may run into surprises at the most unremarkable corners at any time.

As well as all the local choice, all kinds of food from China, Asia, and further c, like Japanese, Korean food and various Western foods, also await.

The Poetry of Chengdu

Chengdu, is described as a beautiful land in Li Bai's poem “the numerous households constitute a gorgeous painting”, the fragrance admired by Du Fu’s line “gorgeous flowers upon flowers”, and the pleasure described by Bakin, “Sichuan Opera, Old streets and Local foods...”

In ancient times, poets were said to have to travel to Sichuan. The culture of poetry has flourished in Chengdu ever since. Countless literati and poets have taken up the brush and written down truly eternal characters. For example, at Du Fu Thatched Cottage, Du Fu composed over 240 poems. Contemporary poetry is dominated by two publications: North China has “Poetry Periodical”, while the South boasts “Stars Poetry Periodicial”, based in Chengdu. Local poets craft the color and fragrance of the region into every line.

The “face-changing” magic show is one of the main acts of Sichuan’s opera, representing otherwise invisible and imperceptible emotions and psychological states with only facepaints. If you feel like watching these unique performances, the “Shu Feng Ya Yun" located in Qingyang District, is a good choice.

The Jinsha Site Museum is located in Qingyang District, exhibiting the ruins of the ancient Sichuan culture of the Shang and Zhou dynasties. The museum exhibits more than 10,000 extraordinary works of art, including gold, bronze, jade, stone, lacquer wood, ivory, pottery, and so on, with the most treasured being the “Golden Sun Bird" totem.

Nightlife in Chengdu: the Later the Better

Nights in Chengdu are still bustling, with dazzling lights and shifting shadows, taking on a different charm to the daytime. After work, people invite their friends out for card games, or see opera in the parks, while the younger generation explore the many bars after dinner and burst into firing passion.

Along the Jinjiang River, you can find Lan Kwai Fong and the Jiuyan Bridge bar street. Creatures of the night cannot afford to miss a visit here. There are also a number of small pubs and craft beer bars, such as The Beer Nest on Jinxiu Road, with Yulin Road’s establishments having been sung about in Zhao Lei’s “Chengdu". For those seeking the sophisticated, it is recommended to pay a visit to “Bu Yun Lang” on the 25th floor of the Crowne Plaza Chengdu City Center. There one can enjoy a variety of skillfully prepared cocktails against the liberating backdrop of the city.

The night can be dark, so how about hiding away in a theater teahouse? Holding a cup of hot tea, leisurely watching a Sichuan opera or tea art performance – a truly authentic pastime. In addition to the face-changing magic, Sichuan Opera also includes fire breathing, rolling lamps, and other acts sure to fill with awe. If you want to savor the ancient art of tea without stepping out of the hotel, InterContinental Century City Chengdu, with its CHA Lounge, is your perfect choice.

Food is an indispensable part of Chengdu’s nightlife. From Sichuan-style hotpot available until the early hours, to the belly-warming pork-knuckle soup, and from the fragrant and spicy crawfish to the finger-licking skewers of meat and vegetables – the nightlife in Chengdu is a whirlwind of flavors.

How to Get There

Chengdu has 1 airport and 2 passenger railway stations. Shuangliu Airport, about 16 km from downtown, is a passenger and freight distribution hub of central China. Only 30 minutes away from downtown by car, it also boasts airport buses, taxis, inter-city coaches and other means of transportation.

Chengdu East Railway Station and Chengdu Station constitute the railway hub of Chengdu. Located in the East 3rd Ring, Chengdu East Railway Station is linked with Metro Lines 2 and 7, as well as by bus, allowing passengers to go directly to their destinations after disembarking. Chengdu Station, located on the North 2nd Ring Road, also boasts convenient transportation, linked with both Metro Lines 1 and 7 and buses.

The delicious Sichuanese foods beyond count, the endless human kindness, and the relaxed and leisurely slow life.... Come to Chengdu, smell the fragrant flowers, and enjoy this elegant city.
