Madison sits near Alabama's northern border, primarily within Madison County. It is part of the Huntsville Metropolitan Area, which is the second-largest metropolitan area in Alabama. On all sides of the city, Madison is bordered by Huntsville. Nearly 48,000 people call Madison home. Its history includes people from many indigenous cultures, although it was first settled by a European-American in the early 1800s. Madison's climate is humid subtropical, which is categorized by hot, humid summers and mild winters.
