We stayed at the hotel as the start to our Asian cruise out of Hong Kong to Singapore. Taxi from the airport at 4p.m. took just over 2 hours. There is no doubt that this hotel is beautifully located
for views. They are stunning, particularly at night. Unfortunately I had misread the write up and thought that as Spire Elite we had access to the lounge. Not so, access was chargeable. Breakfasts - whilst the buffet selection was nice, a bit pushed to justify approx £35 per head per day. But then it is in line with the balance of menu charges in the hotel. Don't get me wrong I am used to paying but to be frank the prices were a little on the steep side - even for the Intercon..
The service was superb in all open areas, but then at over £100 for 2 drinks (one non alcoholic) and two bowls of soup and some tiny chicken satay sticks in the lobby area (plus a surcharge of 10% per day over the room rate for service -another £45) to be frank it needed to be.
We were pleasantly surprised to be upgraded to an executive room which was very spacious.
Initially we thought that the guidance given by the concierge on local tours was excellent until we visited some of the places he mentioned. Stanley market was basically full of cheap stalls selling tat and not worth the trip. (Apparently it used to be great.) Aberdeen harbour and fishing village consisted of a trip around a port looking at a few nice boats (gin palaces which are the same in all nice harbours) and the fishing village was more of a trip around old metal trawler type vessels in various states of disarray and a view of an old ice factory. To be frank a trip around Grimsby docks would have probably cut it more, and it didn't need to last 1 hour! It would have been nice if the concierge had been more candid and honest about the places.....we could have saved a day. We ate out across the road at "The Mask" -had a wonderful meal. The Sitting Buddha, cable ride and temple not to be missed. - Probably the highlight and were not told about.. Do the peak at night for spectacular sight. In short lovely hotel, but expect to be charged in line with what the top 1- 5% of the populus in Hong Kong can afford to pay. Makes London look very cheap. [Less]
