-
Set against the dramatic peaks of the Sierra Madre Oriental, Monterrey combines a modern cityscape with mountain trails, historic plazas and one of northern Mexico’s most distinctive food cultures. Plan a long weekend of museums and restaurants, a family trip with plenty of outdoor time or a road trip into the surrounding mountains – Monterrey makes it easy to mix city sightseeing with nature. Use this guide to choose the right area to stay, plan your days and discover what to eat while you’re here.
Travel TipsPlan around the weather: Spring and autumn generally offer comfortable conditions for sightseeing and hiking. Summer afternoons can be very hot, with average highs around 35°C (95°F), so schedule outdoor activities for the morning.
Build in outdoor time: Monterrey’s mountains are a major part of the experience. Leave room in your itinerary for Chipinque, La Huasteca or another nearby natural area.
Allow for traffic: Major roads can become congested during weekday commuting hours, particularly when crossing between districts.
Pack sun protection: Water, sunscreen, a hat and comfortable shoes are useful for days spent in parks, along the riverwalk or on mountain trails.
Check the events calendar: Independence Day celebrations, the Festival Internacional Santa Lucía and football matches can bring large crowds and change the feel of the city.
Try local specialties: Make time for cabrito, carne asada and machacado con huevo to experience Monterrey’s northern Mexican food traditions.
