This is a hard hotel to review. It has good and bad points.
The good: You can walk to most of the historic sites, but if you can't, the shuttle is fantastic. Our shuttle drivers were one of the
best parts of our stay. Always friendly, fast, and over-the-top accommodating. In fact, we found the staff cheerful and friendly. The breakfast is actually a step up from usual HIE fare. The dining area remained clean and well stocked throughout our stay.
Our actual room wasn't great, and I wonder if that's because we used points/free night. I asked for a non-smoking room, but ours smelled so heavily of old smoke that I'm certain there is no real difference in this hotel. Our carpet was torn. It took forever for hot water to reach our shower, and when it did, it squealed. I am certain our bedding was not changed during our stay, as the same small stains on my pillowcase were still there on the day I checked out. We did receive new towels each day, but I don't think the room was actually cleaned. And it wasn't terribly clean when we checked in. Nothing was crawling around (Yes, I'm one of those people), but all of the corners were dirty. If it's vacuumed, it is only a quick pass in the center of the room.
The rooms themselves are extremely quiet. You will not hear your neighbors or their TV, which is definitely a plus. However, if you get a room on the freeway side of the hotel, you can expect to feel as though you are sleeping in the median. Also, there is a LOUD squealing/ringing noise on that side of the hotel that we eventually figured out is the train. I think maybe the brakes, as it goes downhill here on the other side of the highway. Really annoying, and if you're a light sleeper, you'll definitely mind it.
I asked for guaranteed late checkout, as we didn't want to haul our bags all over Philly on our last day there. The hotel could not fulfill that request, as they had a large group coming in that day. Not their fault, but just warning others in case you usually rely on it.
Would I recommend it? Depends. If sleep and hygienic rooms are important to you, then no. If you're not a light sleeper and you don't mind the occasional dusty corner, then yes. For all its faults, the staff really pulled this one out of the dumpster. Honestly, everyone we met was cheerful and accommodating. Front desk staff, food service, and shuttle drivers work hard, and those people really saved what probably would have been a 2* review. [Less]
