Description

No matter where you stay in San Francisco, you'll find amazing things to see and do close to your doorstep. Its rich arts heritage is celebrated at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Asian Art Museum, and the de Young Museum. The spirits of Beatnik writers and rock musicians who once called Haight-Ashbury home are ever-present on its colorful streets, and some would say that no San Francisco trip is complete without a visit to Alcatraz Island and its former high-security prison. Kids love meeting San Francisco's animal residents, from the exotic creatures at the zoo to the sea lions congregating on Pier 39. The Exploratorium and wax museum will keep little ones entertained.

Description

San Francisco has a diverse range of hotels, from luxurious downtown establishments to budget-friendly chain hotels near the airport and Fisherman's Wharf. Bed-and-breakfasts around Nob Hill and the Mission District give travelers a taste of true San Francisco hospitality.

No matter where you stay, you'll find it easy to explore San Francisco on foot or using public transport. Local neighborhoods are small and easily navigated, so even newcomers find their way around using buses, streetcars, and cable cars on the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency which allow you to leave your car behind and explore areas outside your hotel.

Description

San Francisco's downtown area is home to some of the city's most upmarket hotels and designer label stores. If the area's too rich for your blood or banking plans, it's still fun to people-watch from a Maiden Lane café. Most tourists prefer to stay north of downtown in the Fisherman's Wharf area, where they can stroll along the pier, catch the ferry to Alcatraz Island, and chow down on some of San Francisco's best seafood.

Aging hippies and music buffs love the Haight-Ashbury nostalgia, while Japan Town offers a taste of Asia with authentic sushi, relaxing day spas and Kabuki theater. If business is what brings you to San Francisco, consider staying in the Financial District or the South of Market area, which puts you close to the Moscone Convention Center, and leading design and tech firms.

Description

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is one of the largest in the country and a natural choice for many air passengers traveling to San Francisco. Most major airlines around the world operate flights to SFO, which lies 13 miles from the downtown district. Travelers staying near Union Square or the Convention Center will find catching the BART public transportation system from the airport to be convenient, but a cab can save you a long walk if you're staying near the waterfront. Certain hotels also operate shuttle services for their guests, so be sure to ask.

Alternatively, consider flying in to Oakland or San Jose, which are both within easy reach of San Francisco. Shuttle services operate along the 25 miles between Oakland International Airport and San Francisco. San Jose International Airport is twice that distance removed from San Francisco, but you can easily catch the CalTrain or a shuttle bus back to the city. Often the flights to these smaller airports are cheaper, and they're not prone to the delays that often come when flying through the fog back into SFO.
