Welcome To Austin

Welcome to Austin, Texas and the historic InterContinental Stephen F Austin! It is our pleasure to introduce you to some of the great places that make Austin a favorite destination world-wide. We welcome this opportunity to share our recommendations with you.

LOCAL ESSENTIALS

THE PERFECT DAY

MORNING

Wake up early and begin your day with an energetic walk along the Lady Bird Lake Hike and Bike Trail, a rambling route through Austin's leafy, much loved park. I suggest you reward yourself with a tasty brunch at the South Congress Cafe, then spend the rest of the morning shopping in South Austin. If you need a late morning pick-me-up, stop by Jo's Coffee House for an Iced Turbo or indulge in your favorite flavor icecream at the famous Amy's Ice Creams across the street. Austin has some of the best and original Food Trucks in the nation. You'll find them parked all throughout downtown and on South Congress Ave.

AFTERNOON

Why not go and play in Zilker Park, 358 glorious acres in the city center. Take a ride round the park on the Zilker Zephyr miniature train, row a canoe out onto the lake or be like a local and take a dip in Barton Springs Pool. This amazing, natural spring-fed pond is three acres wide and maintains a temperature of 68 degrees F all year round, so you can swim whatever the weather. While you're here, pack in a culture fix: head to the Sculpture Garden at the south end to see works by sculptor Charles Umlauf.

EVENING

To finish a day in the great outdoors of Austin, enjoy a delicious dinner of melt-in-the-mouth Gulf Lump Crab cakes or try the beef tenderloin at the Paggi Housel. Then, at sundown, watch Austin's resident bats venture out from under Congress Avenue Bridge. After dinner, I recommend you stroll over to the Warehouse District to catch some live music at Antone's. For a perfect end to the day, enjoy cocktails on the terrace of the Stephen F's Bar & Terrace with the beautiful view of the Texas State Capitol!

INSIDER TIPS

LOCAL CULTURE

Cash

Some older local establishments do not accept credit or debit cards. Always have some cash on hand.

Comfortable Clothing

Austin is a very casual city. Please make sure to bring comfortable shoes and light clothing for layering, as it is hot and humid in the summer and chilly in the winter.

Tipping

A tip of 15 to 20 percent is a customary gratuity for good service in a restaurant or bar.

DID YOU KNOW ?

Live Music Capital of the World

Austin is known as the 'Live Music Capital of the World.' Famous artists such as Willie Nelson and Stevie Ray Vaughan have called Austin home. There are daily live music performances at the Austin Bergstrom International Airport.

The bats

Austin houses the largest number of Mexican fruit bats in North America. Each summer, thousands of people gather at the Congress Avenue Bridge to watch the bats take flight for feeding, minutes before sundown.

University of Texas at Austin

The University of Texas at Austin is one of North America's largest universities. Famous students have included Matthew McConaughey, Janis Joplin, Laura Bush, and Walter Cronkite.

WHAT TO PACK

Bathing suit

Austin boasts many natural swimming holes, and on a hot day, nothing can be better than cooling off in one. Don't forget to pack your bathing suit, sun lotion and a hat.

Casual attire

When packing your clothes, please keep in mind that Austin is a very casually attired city.
