I will say the staff treats the guests as if they are in a five-star hotel. I was always treated very courteously by everyone I had contact with.
The location is great for seeing and doing things with a short walk. The National Theater, Museums, market and major shopping district all within a few blocks. A coffee shop is just across the street for those needing a Starbucks style coffee.
The only downsides were you have to be very wary of the amount of noise that can be generated by the street in front, the casino band and the entertainment/events on the 17th floor. All of which on weekends especially can be exceptionally loud.
The breakfast was well presented, but I would probably skip it if I went back and eat at one of the nearby restaurants. The preparation is okay in terms of authentic Costa Rican dishes, but most Americans/Canadians/ Europeans will soon realize that lots of salt is a standard in Costa Rica. The restaurant breakfast being no exception. It seemed great at first to have the tamales and gallo pinto for breakfast, but by the second day I had to skip all the hot food because of the salt content. Not just at the restaurant but anywhere...and I am normally very strict about eating local cuisine.

We started our stay in San Jose staying at a terrible hotel down the street from the Holiday Inn. After the first night I ventured up the hill to checkout the Holiday Inn. It was like an oasis. The Holiday Inn - Aurola is awesome. Very clean, well light, with great ambiance and decor. We will be back next year and will definitely stay here again. Great location if staying in San Jose. It is one of the tallest buildings downtown, so you can easily see the hotel from various vantage points.

The staff members went so far above and beyond any possible expectations to help us solve a very difficult problem regarding a wallet left behind. We cannot thank them enough. The front desk staff and bellmen on the morning of Jan 2, 2015 in particular! Also, when we had difficulty making local calls from the room, the front desk placed the calls for us. At the second attempt, we learned that the local call service has to be "turned on" in the room, and it had not). The bellmen were also happy to give helpful, detailed explanations such as where to find an ATM nearby. Even the maids went above and beyond to organize my kids' stuff neatly. We requested a roll away bed at check-in, and by the time we got to the room, it was already there! We were amazed at the promptness. We had difficulty controlling/adjusting the heat in the room, and went to bed in sweaters but it warmed up during the night. Other than that, we'd give the room 5 stars. Special special thanks to the Jan 2 problem solvers!!
