Los Angeles International Airport is the main gateway for many visitors, but the drive from LAX can vary dramatically depending on the neighborhood and time of day. Rental cars, taxis, rideshare, hotel shuttles where available, buses, and public transit all have a place. The best choice depends on how spread out your itinerary is.
Los Angeles Metro connects several useful corridors, including trips between Downtown and Hollywood and between Downtown and Santa Monica. It can be practical when your destinations line up with the network, but not every major attraction sits directly on a rail line or convenient bus route.
A rental car gives you flexibility for multi-neighborhood days, coastal drives, and destinations with limited transit access. The tradeoff is parking cost, traffic, and local restrictions. Rideshare can be a better answer for event nights or shorter gaps when you would rather not hunt for parking.
Walking works inside individual districts such as Downtown, Hollywood Boulevard, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, and Venice. It does not work as the primary way to travel between them. Before heading out, check current traffic, transit alerts, parking rules, and airport pickup instructions.
The most efficient way to move around Los Angeles is also the simplest planning rule: group the day by area and avoid repeating the same cross-city drive.
