Visiting Crawley – A Guide

For many visitors, Crawley's big selling point is its location, minutes from Gatwick Airport (LGW) and less than an hour from London. It's home to thriving businesses, modern shopping and leisure centres, and natural beauty nearby in the rolling South Downs and the Surrey Hills.

Whether you’re visiting on business or stopping over, there’s plenty to keep you amused.

Crawley: town layout

Crawley's town centre is bounded by Crawley Avenue (A2011) and the M23 motorway. The main shopping area is between Station Way and The Boulevard.

To the east, Three Bridges and Worth are residential districts close to the M23. Manor Royal Business District, between the town and Gatwick Airport, is home to more than 300 businesses, including Virgin Atlantic.

West of the centre in Goff's Park you'll find Crawley Museum, woodland and a miniature railway.

The concierge recommends…

  • A round of golf at Tilgate Forest Golf Centre, which has a nine-hole par-three course and an 18-hole course in pretty wooded countryside.
  • A free guided tour of Wakehurst Place, a grand Elizabethan mansion surrounded by formal gardens.
  • A trip to 13th-century Hever Castle, once home to Anne Boleyn, one of the less fortunate of Henry VIII’s six wives.

Hotels in Crawley

Most hotels in Crawley are close to the two main highways that loop round the town centre, the A2011 and the M23 motorway. Travellers seeking easy access to Gatwick Airport and the Manor Royal Business District often stay here, on the outskirts of town.

Three Bridges and Worth are peaceful residential districts. Close to the M23, they also have fast links to Gatwick, via Three Bridges train station.

If catching that early flight is paramount, you can stay right beside the airport. You’ll still have easy access to the restaurants and entertainment in the town centre.

Eating Out in Crawley

International eateries and cosy pubs dominate Crawley's dining scene. You'll find Italian, Mexican, Indian, Chinese and Thai restaurants in the town centre. Takeaway joints offer kebabs, pizza and fish and chips.

At The Hawth theatre, you can enjoy a pre-show dinner at Café Viva and an interval drink at one of two bars.

The chef recommends…

Shopping in Crawley

Crawley's main shopping area is close to the station, between Station Way and The Boulevard. You'll find more than 90 shops, including Debenhams, Boots, Primark, Body Shop and Monsoon, at County Mall Shopping Centre on Station Way. You can pick up fresh local produce at the open-air market in Queens Square, held every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Antique hunters can rummage for bargains in the traffic-free Lanes in buzzy Brighton, only 30 minutes away by train.

Culture & Nightlife in Crawley

Crawley's cultural scene has plenty to please visitors. In the city centre, The Hawth hosts ballet, opera, musicals and live rock and jazz. Its Studio theatre shows arthouse films, as well as drama and opera transmitted live from London's National Theatre and Royal Opera House.

For a bigger choice, hop on a train to buzzing Brighton, half an hour away.

  • Six Degrees attracts hip young locals with a cocktail bar where mixologists can create your own custom-made 'personalised cocktail', as well as a plush champagne and shisha bar.
  • Moka Crawley has space for 1200 in its lofty Moka dance space and the laid-back Vista Lounge.

Visiting Crawley with a Family

Families visiting Crawley will find lots to see and do. Kids can meet cute meerkats and other creatures at Tilgate Park and Leisure Centre, or whizz down treetop ziplines at Go Ape.

There’s more family fun at Goff’s Park, where you can ride miniature trains on the 700-metre Goff's Park Light Railway.

Amazing 'Intercontinental Experience'
By MrElias
Anyone who has read my reviews over the years knows that I am a loyal member of the IHG program because I love Intercontinental hotels. If there is an IHG where ever I travel, that is where you can [More] find me. Thus I was very excited to be staying at 3 Intercontinental hotels while in the United Kingdom. My first stay was at the 'London Park Lane' and the whole experience was extraordinary. I then passed a week in Scotland and was hoping that after the 'Park Lane'...this newest member to IHG in the United Kingdom would live up to my expectations. All I can say is...Oui, Dah, Si ...YES! First, the acknowledgment of my 'Platinum Ambassador Status' was as outstanding as when I arrived in London at the 'Park Lane'. In fact, I used points to pay for the room at this hotel which entitled me to a standard with a one level upgrade as I was Platinum. Cheri, the wonderful receptionist at the check-in station made a big fuss over my status and thanked me for my loyalty and promptly put me from a standard to a top level upgrade of the 'Premium Room with view over Canary Wharf' (just under the suite) with the most magnificent views of the Thames from all of our windows. She is a true credit to the IHG team as was Kia (I hope I got that right) and Eva in the lounge and Claudio who was a concierge formidable! This hotel that is in Greenwich, is in an area where hotels and access to other areas of London are going up so rapidly that if you are going to London and want 5* luxe at an amazing price and don't mind a 10 minute tube ride to wherever you want to go...I'd grab a reservation because I envision this hotel, once this area is truly discovered by tourists, to be rated as one of the top hotels in London. The hotel is simply innovative, and modern design of the highest level with a sense of warmth that you feel throughout the hotel. It is simply that new, shiny and so sparkling I dare say you could have your dinner while sitting on the floor :) So many comfortable nooks and crannies to sit and relax with tea or a drink through out the hotel, as well. The lounge is a must as the 'Full Breakfast' ...Full Tea....and the fine champagnes and wines with appetizers in the evening make it a place you look forward to returning. And the views whist you are sipping that glass of wine. One night my partner was not feeling well and Kia (I hope I remembered her name correctly) couldn't have been more accommodating and helpful and truly did all she could to help...and I have a feeling she was staying past her time to leave for the day. Our room was as fashionable and sparkling clean as you would expect a 5* luxe hotel to provide but as I said...those views are absolutely amazing of the Thames and the city. We were constantly being brought water, fruit and chocolates being part of the loyalty club. Such a generous hotel in general! There are three restaurants and the dinner from the 'Market Brasserie' was excellent. Taking a drink on the 18th floor of the chic 'nightclub' is a great way to end the day looking out at London's twinkling lights. Fitness center, spa, pool...all high-end state of the art without sparing any expense. The rooms were quiet and that 'IHG king size bed' is always the best to lull you to sleep. I couldn't have asked for a better stay. Another 'Intercontinental experience' at its best. [Less]
Brand new hotel with impressive Canary Wharf views
By Ivan.2015
I stayed for a weekend with my family and had a lovely hotel experience. We all enjoyed the rooms, breakfast, pool and astonishing Canary Wharf views. It is difficult to find such a nice hotel in [More] London. The price is the distance with city centre but the connection with underground takes 15 minutes. Different to Intercontinental Park Lane, better for children... [Less]

Perfect venue for visiting in Battersea and travelling into London Great atmosphere Totally different to other Crown Plazas I have stayed in Previously a different brand of hotel bought by IHG [More] hence the unusual style of the hotel interior Nothing exciting immediately around the hotel - restaurants, sights etc. Unless you like helicopters. Great rooms well equipped, superb sound proofing. [Less]
